Star Wars Box Office

"On Monday, Star Wars Episode III surpassed the lifetime gross of Return of the Jedi to rise to number 18 on the all-time domestic blockbusters chart and after Tuesday, it climbed another spot to surpass Episode II. By Thursday morning, it will have risen another notch passing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and by the end of Friday the Jedi film is set to swipe the number 15 slot currently held by the first Harry Potter film. "

a shame the movie hasn't got such long legs as Titanic, I'm kinda doubting it will reach the top 10.

Titanic =

Teenage girls crazy for DiCaprio watching and paying for the movie 5-6 times.

Even the teens wanted to see the people dying and drowning and the cool special effects.

You had girls for the love story and guys for the people dying and drowning and the special effects

You had grandmas for the love story and souvenirs from the past.

You had grandpas for the people dying and drowning and the special effects

That movie was for everyone.

I was working in a movie theater back then when Titanic was playing. It was crazy. Sold out, every day, for almost 2 months.

Star Wars = Fans for the fist two weeks.. After that.. Almost nothing left.

That's spot on... SW3 is like a 100m champion and Titanic won the marathon. I wonder what it'll take to bump Titanic out of that #1 spot.

Titanic was a disappointment, maybe it's because i dont fit the teen/grandpa segments.

It will take a MONSTER to take Titanic out of there ... I dont see it happening in the next 10 years.

If you count for inflation - Titanic is no where near number one - the highest grossing film of all time is still Gone with the Wind - and second to that is the original Star Wars (1977) - and if you consider it was like a 50 cents to buy a ticket when Gone with the Wind was released - that's a huge accomplishment.

your not taking into account the most important factor...........especially for Gone With the Wind.......it had NO COMPETITION

even in the 70's hardly any movies were released compared to today's huge slate. Star Wars was the only game in town in 1977.

Titanic's box office is easily the most impressive in world history when you take this most important factor into account. Its worldwide gross is 1.8 Billion Dollars. Lets put that in perspective. The #2 gross of all time is LOTR: Return of the King, and that comes in at 1.12 Billion.

Titanic came out at a time of massive competition and way high movie ticket prices (which also keeps folks away and awaiting for the movie on dvd or video). Its the number one king of all time, and with home video becoming even more dominant, may remain that way for a long, long time.
