your not taking into account the most important factor...........especially for Gone With the Wind.......it had NO COMPETITION

even in the 70's hardly any movies were released compared to today's huge slate. Star Wars was the only game in town in 1977.

Titanic's box office is easily the most impressive in world history when you take this most important factor into account. Its worldwide gross is 1.8 Billion Dollars. Lets put that in perspective. The #2 gross of all time is LOTR: Return of the King, and that comes in at 1.12 Billion.

Titanic came out at a time of massive competition and way high movie ticket prices (which also keeps folks away and awaiting for the movie on dvd or video). Its the number one king of all time, and with home video becoming even more dominant, may remain that way for a long, long time.
