Google introduces sitemaps

Check this out:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/si.../protocol.html
Quote:
The Sitemap Protocol allows you to inform search engine crawlers about URLs on your Web sites that are available for crawling. A Sitemap consists of a list of URLs and may also contain additional information about those URLs, such as when they were last modified, how frequently they change, etc.

Sitemaps are particularly beneficial when users can not reach all areas of a Web site through a browseable interface ? i.e. users are unable to reach certain pages or regions of a site by following links. For example, any site where certain pages are only accessible via a search form would benefit from creating a Sitemap and submitting it to search engines.

This document describes the formats for Sitemap files and also explains where you should post your Sitemap files so that search engines can retrieve them.

Please note that the Sitemap Protocol supplements, but does not replace, the crawl-based mechanisms that search engines already use to discover URLs. By submitting a Sitemap (or Sitemaps) to a search engine, you will help that engine's crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.
Excellent, a new wave of optimization begins. I'll exploit this to the fullest early, I just wonder how far it will get me. At least it will make it easier to feed google thousands of false directories created from a single php script

Its all XML based, so it won't take very long to retrofit this new indexing method to existing sites.

cool, thanks for sharing. Every site needs a site map. I'm getting one done for my swingers site and for my other sites.

Cant be done - each site is built in a different way, and only the designer knows how to access all the information. If it could be automated with a script for all sites, then you wouldn't have to generate these to be submitted

Its times like this where I'm glad I build my stuff off of a framework that pulls all pages from the `pages` table in my DB. Now all I have to do is make a script to SELECT * FROM `pages`, then output it as XML. Oh, and make sure to throw in redundant pages while I'm at it to give the illusion of a larger site

Unless I'm reading it wrong, that's not the case. They are showing an example of how to XML encode URLs with Python, but you can use any script in any language to do that.

I'm talking about their generator:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/si...generator.html
"In addition, Python version 2.2 must be installed on your webserver - check with your web hosting company if you are unsure."

Back in 1999 when I first started learning about XML I knew it would be good for something eventually and here it is.
