The short news reports make it hard to judge the guy. This is proving exactly as you say - he's anything but stupid.

I'll second that. Galloway can hold his own, very sharp man.

This is serious box office viewing - i doubt the senate have seen many hearings like this one. Refreshing to see someone go up there talk straight and tell it like it is.

Remember this is the guy that beat the Labour party to a consistituency. Infact one of the only constituencies which wasnt taken by one of the three main parties but was won by his own "Respect" political party.

Whatever you think about what he stands for, he certainly is a great speaker. His winning speech after his victory in the Bethnal Green & Bow constituency was very powerful.

samsam...as per the previous remarks, perhaps you are not sure what he is all about.

Yes.
Very intelligent man and I would think very manipulative also.
Over the years there has been some real key speakers in British politics and again whether people agree with what Galloway has done or not, you cannot deny that he is capable of destroying people with his communication skills.

It doesnt matter, it was a very strongly held Labour position and its never been done before.

I really dont think he goes too far. Rather, that few people have the balls to be as outspoken as he is because they know that the dissenting view is the one that tends to get trampled on.

I also reckon the majority of the british public, if theyre honest with themselves, share the same position he has on Iraq. It is a disaster, and it has been a huge calamity thats not over yet.

You missed out.... it was very interesting and very funny at the same time.

The best thing was when a reporter questioned him as he was leaving something like "Do you think it was appropriate to call the senator a crazed neo-con" to which he nodded and replied something like "He is a crazed neo-con..." before adding two or three other insults to the list.

Haha... funny bloke.

I dont usually like paxman but im half way through reading it now and its got galloway right down to a tee. He chose to run in bethnal green because of racial tension which he knew he could exploit...

I saw that interview and thought paxman was way out line.... incidently most of the viewer comments on that web page agree with me on that. Galloway won it fair and square and ive heard no claim to the contrary.

hmmm hardly anyone ever sends comments in if they think something is fine, in the same way that you dont have a "war march" but you do have "anti war marches". He wanted to get into parliment, his old seat was in glasgow, think he would have won there? No way! Although no longer a seat, the replacement seat was won with a 10,000 majority. He searched for a backdoor into parliment, bethnal green and bow, and he has taken the muslim population of that seat for a ride. He has 1 policy and that is anti-war, he found the set of people that would appeal to the most, funnily enough some people have cottoned on to this and hate his guts, they know he is just using them to get into the commons.

Evan

Sure but they could just have equally slated Galloway and he would have been a more likely target of complaint as he is the subject of the interview (as opposed to the interviewer). If anything Galloway himself is far less mainstream "popular" than Paxman.

Anyhow, debating how he won it is pointless. He played by the rules and he won - its as simple as that. I agree that he appears to have just one policy but the fact is that the majority of voters liked it and thats all thats needed.

he played on her race, he played on her gender and pandered to 'traditional' local views of women and mixed race people...so it may be by the rules but it was dirty pool

Sarah, I know you dont like Galloway but I just dont get it.

To me, this guy is brilliant. He's just outstanding for being a champion on a moral cause which the people of the country (if not the wider world support). Hes standing up to the government (UK and US) and, against the odds, having some considerable measure of success.

Its his outspoken attitude that has resulted in so many accusations being levelled against him, largely because he rocks the boat. He's fought in the courts and successfully cleared his name every single time.

Do you know something that was hidden today? He said that if there was any truth to the allegations against him that the proof would be known and surely put in front of him at this hearing. His first "OWNED the senate" moment was when he said he met with Saddam Hussein the exact same number of times as Donald Rumsfeld, the difference was that Donald Rumsfeld's 2 meetings were to give him guns and maps while his 2 meetings were to call for end to sanctions and war.

see this shows his intelligence, hes made sure everyone listening has remembered that, and not that fact that there are countless documents showing bribery....

i don't believe him to be totally clean and in addition when I have heard him interviewed in the past (even before the war) he was very rude to people and down right mean.
