Probably not the best, but definitely one of the best. I like a lot of his songs. Most of his songs are really original too, hard to find that in most music.

Good point, but Neil Diamond wrote the lyrics for The Monkees.

My personal fav is Zack de La Rocha (of Rage Aginst The Machine), followed by Robert Hunter, whom wrote many of the songs for the Grateful Dead.

Is this some kind of joke? The best songwriter ever is without a doubt Paul McCartney. Then maybe Dylan, Garfunkel, Neil Young, Roger Waters, Townsend, Jimmy Page. Neil Diamond??

Bob Denver was Gillgian, John Denver was the songwriter.

Neil Diamond I don't think is the greatest songwriter but he had a good run.

I remember back in the day he would come to D/FW and would only schedule one concert and it would sell out in hours so they'd do more and before you knew it he was there like 4-7 days every day sold out...he did this all across the country.

No way, John Lennon.

Neil Diamond is not even the best Neil, Neil Young is.

Paul is amazing, I agree. But I just find it ironic, you thought enough - to regard/correlate this topic with a beatle (aka the beatles). Yet didn't even make reference to John even thereafter strumming off a few others besides Paul on your list. You get what I mean? If you truly appreciate Paul, I don't see how John doesn't squeeze his way into your life.

I mean regarding "song writing" ability, I think we all know John was the driving force. We won't even have to compare careers, simply look at 'The Beatles' (White). The contrast is clear, McCartney is singing about Martha my Dear (great song, but very pop-ish), or Honey Pie. And then you have Lennon with a Happiness is a Warm Gun. That is written with so much creative freedom, it could be perceived as a kicking-heroin song, underlying sexual innuendo, or just an all out anti-gun campaign.*

*IMO obviously.

As much as I love Neil Diamond's stuff, I think Paul Anka has him beat in the songwriting department by a mile.
