Advertising a Mainstream Site

I'm looking at some places to advertise my new site (mainstream) got a bit of a shock when i saw some of the prices they charge.
Has anyone here had any experience with mainstream advertising ( newsletters, links, banners) what works and what doesn't.
Anything i need to know before spending my money?

help or suggestions are welcome
