Is it not good to leave a laptop running 24/7?

I have a hewlett packard laptop from 2004, pentium III 2.0ghz, 256MB RAM, and just all around work horse. I have a cooling 'mat' with two fans under it to keep it a little bit cooler.

I'm typing this on a Dell Inspiron 8500 that effectively hasn't been turned off for two years and it's running fine.

If it hasn't been turned off in two years, I'm assuming you don't take it anywhere with you, and if you don't take it anywhere with you, then what's the point of having a laptop?

I leave my compaq presario 2100 running for weeks at a time w/ no problems. I use it for everything on the web development end save graphic design, which I use on my desktop.

Only time I restart my laptop is in the rare occurance it freezes up or something, which has happened like once.

I have a dell inspiron 3800 (500mhz, 64mb ram) from 01'......it ran 24-7 for 4 years, finally took a crap 2 weeks ago, but only because a chinese hacker had his way with it & flashed the bios.

I'll get around to fixing it sometime this week.

Laptops are hardcore workhorses

Thanks for the help again guys.
Brisk: I have that vantec two fan cooler. I really would like an upgrade from this now but something really powerful even though it's loud I want this sucker to be cool throughout the day. This one that I have now does a good job only if you place the laptop in an exact position on the mat and every laptop is different. Took me awhile to fiddle with it to place it correctly so it will maximize the cooling potential.

if they can survive 8 hours of normal business use

they are A-OK for 24/7 operations - just as long as the screen saver is in effect

it's actually worse for a computer to be turned on and off - as the electrical jolt damages more than shutting off the computer will

I have a 2002 Gateway 1.2Ghz 512Mb ram and it runs for weeks at a time. Occasionally I will restart it, but only if things get real buggy ... and that almost never happens.

And this baby is from 2002! Anything newer than that and you should be golden man.

I understand and actually yes I heard that same thing about the shutting down of computers making it worse because of the power surges.

I turn it off at night or when I leave for extended periods of time. There is really no point to keep it on all the time, it takes whole 5 seconds to reboot from sleep mode.

Many newer laptops will over heat, the old ones always work great when leaving them on. My newer laptops over heat after about 12 hours.

The only time it does get turned off is if I'm travelling (normally between the UK and USA) - it gets stuffed in a backpack for travelling to the airport and takeoff, used on the flight, stuffed in backpack for landing and travelling from the airport, then turned back on almost as soon as I arrive at my final destination.

I have two laptops here, an HP and a Dell, and they are on 24/7. The Dell sits idle most of the time but the HP is always running at least 4 or 5 programs and both are fine.

if this is the case - I would never buy that particular brand of notebook
no computer should overheat unless you leave it in direct sunlight and work in a room thats 110 degrees

any of the major brands test extensively against such normal condition situations

I wouldn't leave my laptop on for hours upon hours on end. But thats just me.

If its a good enough machine you should have no problems with it at all. My Dell is rock solid, I could probably leave it on forever and it would still be running nicely
