Kazaa has been sued for copyright infringement ...

A Dutch court ordered them to pay $45,000 A DAY in damages ...

That is probably the reason for the problem ...

The program itself might be going down, no more downloads if they lose against the court, the community will be really hard to bring down.

Kazaa is a distributed DB that was thought of with this situation in mind, with napster, you had to connect to their servers and a lot of info went through them, that's why they could be held liable and asked to stop what went through their service.

With Kazaa, the "Servers" are standard computers, which act as "Supernodes" all kazaa installs make your computer a supernode, which you can turn off through the interface.

Now, if Kazaa goes down, there is no reason for a bunch of kids not to write another interface, it just has to listen to http connections on kazaa's reserved port, spawn a few websites with this freeware for download and you'll keep having peer to peer sharing without any problems...

Kazaa still needed millions to operate ... which was raised with all that adware and scumware on the software ...

With $45,000 A DAY in damages from the Dutch Court ... and the U.S. cases most surely bringing in even more damages in the future ... I doubt anybody can raise much money for this stuff anymore ...

I'm sure what you're saying is possible on a small scale ... but if it gains any momentum like Kazaa did ... good luck.
