You honestly think any of the biggest domain guys are that much smarter than anyone else? I've met most all of them and ok they are all smart guys, but I have yet to meet any that I would label GENIUS. They just made the moves at the right time and snatched great domains. The domains created the wealth, not the buyers.

What some consider LUCK, others consider SKILL.

And there are some players I would consider geniuses... but maybe I'd change my mind after meeting some of them. :1orglaugh

This does not sound like you. Take a peak at teh first 100 domains ever registered some time. I have known about the interent sine it beganand I never bought domain until 2 years ago. How many guys were in early and out early? More then luck to be there now.

I just bought off Eric on SEDO, seemed like a good transaction... why do you say "forget about him?".

You don't need 7-figs to play this game. Just start small. Go after cheap type-in domains to resell to DB and others or go after new registrations or brandable domains and work to find buyers.

I picked up a domain earlier this year that I've been after for nearly two years... I had to track down the owner because whois was a bit outdated and when I finally did track him down, he turned down my first offer and wanted 5-figs... I don't blame him for trying to play hardball. Keep in mind, the domain had no type-in traffic and I wanted it strictly for branding. I had a feeling the concept would be a tech-feasible & acceptable sooner or later. Well this year, I tried to buy the name again and the owner was in dire need of cash and was willing to get rid of the domain and sold it to me for less than $1,000. After I secured the domain, I started contacting all the players in that industry (service side & technology side) and am shopping around a proposal now to get cash + tiny % (if they choose to develop it). The current offers are low 5 figures (w/o %) and I'm going to try to push it into the 6's (w/ %) by letting the companies bid against each other. It was a domain/concept that wasn't even on anyone's radar years ago, never got type-ins, and the term wasn't even being used until this year... but I took a gamble (low risk) and it's paying off. There are many ways to play the domain game and many different pricepoints to enter the marketplace:

- new registrations (new trends, ideas, terms, industries, etc)
- brand-ables (many domain players steer clear of this sector. Fine by me.)
- type-ins (keeping or reselling to larger fish)
etc...

good luck.

Cool advice. Thanks.

Evan, in just one thread you lost any possibility of me doing business with you. I'm just one person, but it seems pretty dumb to me. :2 cents:

Good, maybe he's reformed. He is one of the few guys in this business who screwed me. I'll never forget that guy.

I wanted to deal direct with him in the future, think I'll stick to SEDO unless the screwing was over something other than domain buying.

Dude, there's no skill in knowing Sex.com, Porn.com, Tits.com, Pussy.com, etc. were worth the reg fee back then.

actually there was some 'skill' ( maybe thats the wrong word though ) in that

if not, you would have done it and would own all of them now :winkwink:

It was definitely an investment with some vision (or at least a hope) that those domains would potentially be worth something some day. Then again those people involved in the internet before it was even commercially available to people other than techies were probably more 'in the know' as to the where the future of the internet was heading. Skill is surely a factor, probably with a touch of luck to top it off.

Obviously depends on the domains, and I don't see how the term "sexy" is *very targeted*

It is not

Someone just made a $2,000 offer for one of my domains USACityGuide.com.

Would you sell at that price?

:helpme :1orglaugh

willysbirthday 05-04-2005 07:52 AM

No domain is worth 1 million - for the title alone

if it has associated traffic ... maby

Lee 05-04-2005 07:59 AM

Only read the first post but I think thats a more than generous offer myself.

radical 05-04-2005 08:24 AM

Not an expert on buying domains nor have any real interest in them, prefer to hold to a good name and build up the site!

Though I was contacting by an dating agency with regards to one of my domains:

datingpeoplerelationship.com, replied but never recieved any word again lol!

SeniorX 05-04-2005 02:30 PM

I wouldn't pay more than $50 for sexy.com!!! I own domains of this caliber, they're making some money (yes i know how to maximize on them), but nothing that'd be worth 1 million!!! DB, the owner probably didn't want to rip you off :)

zentz 05-04-2005 02:47 PM

heh... you gave him a nice offer for sure :)

Sure there is! It's called vision.

Mark Twain said it best:

"The secret to success is - find out where the people are going and get there first."

pornguy 05-04-2005 02:59 PM

Damn nice offer, and I think that I would have taken it. Unless I had ideas on making coin off of the name.

DomBuyer 05-04-2005 03:44 PM

I wouldn't pay $1 million for sexy.com. Who offered $1 million for that name? :ugone2far
