Always double down on an 11.
Drink if you want to have fun, but don't
drink if you are trying to win!

Never buy insurance! Tip your cocktail waitress and dealer one dollar every hand. Make sure to double up on your order with the cocktail waitress. If your cocktail waitress is fast with the drinks double up her tip. Make sure the pit boss see all of this.

1. never take insurance
2. double 11s (if you 'feel it' - double 10s as well)
3. have fun losing
4. split aces
5. after a few beers, start splitting 10s
6. if you're becoming addicted and continuously hit the ATM after losing it all - tell em you count cards, they'll make sure you're cured

I'm impressed to be honest.

-Always double down on 11s
-NEVER split tens - NEVER
-Never hit against a dealer 5 or 6 if you have a chance of busting - if you have 9 or lower hit - 10 & 11 double down - 12 and higher stay
-dealer 3&4 can sometimes be thrown in with 5&6
-If you really like to play balls to the wall double down when the dealer is showing a 5/6 and you have anything less then 12
-never take insurance
-Ride the waves, if you start to loss a lot of hands slow down your betting and wait for a hot streak
-You make the majority of your money off double downs and splits - so don't be scared to double down and split as much as possable. Hell double down off your splits if you draw 11
-Always hit with anything less then 17, unless the dealer is showing a good bust card like 5/6 and sometimes a 3/4 - it sucks hitting on 15&16 but the book always says to hit

Um...that's all I can think of right now

Oh yeah tip the dealers - good karma

I see most of you should simply stay as far away from casinos as possible. Not one thing in this statement is true. Take insurance on a single deck game if the count is +2 if you have 20, +3 no matter what you have. Change those numbers accordingly to the decks being played. Tip the dealer every hand? Are you nuts? Play an average of 100 hands per hour and you are giving away $100 an hour and the pit boss could give two shits what and who you're tipping.

When i play:

Double on 11 every time.
Double on 10 against an 8 or less, but only don't do it if there have been a lot of 10 value cards coming up in a row.
Split on aces and double each hand.
And also a lot of things depend on table rules. Like if the dealer must hit if he's on 16 or less, and you're on say 13 and he's got a 5, then you would stay.

You should double on 10 against 9 or less (if you're playing basic strategy and not counting).

Most casinos will not let you double after splitting aces.

Dealer must ALWAYS hit on 16.

I can't believe you guys will sit at a table without at least knowing Basic Strategy, but then again I can't believe people actually put money into slot machines.

Memorize a Basic Strategy chart (make sure it matches the number of decks the casino is using, typical 6 or 8 decks). Search Google for the charts.

Well, i've only ever played at one casino. I wasn't aware that was actually blackjack rules (the thing about house having to hit on 16 or less). I figure it might differ from place to place, but obviously not. But yeah, the place i play at lets me double on 2 aces after splitting. I'm up on blackjack though, so i can't be doing too badly.

Thats called luck, because I guarantee you that if you spent any serious time at a table you will eventually lose. Even playing perfect basic strategy the house has about a 1% advantage. Counting will give the player anywhere from a 1-4% advantage. I can sit on a table, count and still lose, and I've sat at tables and after 4 or 5 hours been up 5 or 10 grand, and its then they start suspecting you are counting. Swings will always occur but it all comes down to what you can do in the long run.

Yeah, it is luck. But i always quit when i'm ahead which i think is also one of the reasons i'm up. Sometimes i'll go to the casino and win go up about 75% in as little as 10 minutes. I'm out the door ASAP. So yeah, i get lucky, but i take advantage of that luck and don't piss it away. Learning strategy will probably help me win more, but honestly, i don't sit at a table for very long and i don't play very serious amounts of money. It's just for fun.

I really hope you are joking ... if not ...

WTF? Tip your dealer EVERY hand? Where the hell did you hear that one? I guess if you're there to lose your money, it's a good strategy ...

(or if you're filthy rich and dropping $10k a hand, in which case a $1 loss every 2 mins. won't much of a difference)

As it is, the house already has an advantage and by giving away at least a dollar per hand tilts the odds against you even more. Then more for the waitress? But hey, if it gets you drunk fast enough you may not notice your wallet getting thin awfully quick

I highly doubt he will be counting cards. Counting cards takes a LOT of practice and if you get caught at the casino they kick you out. He's just worried about basic strategy.

Print out a basic strategy card from the web and bring it to the table with you.... most casinos allow this and you will play correctly every hand. It's not as fun as just getting lucky but at least you wont play stupid

Usually you can keep under the radar by not going nuts with your bets, but it did happen to me at the Rio last year. I only had a few hours left before I had to go to the airport so I sat at an empty table and fluxuated my bets ridiculously. One bet would be $25, the next $400 or higher if the count got good, back and forth like that. It was a beautiful streak, in less than an hour I was up over $12,000. Then two security guys came to me and told me they would like to talk to me, so I got up and and walked a few feet away from the table with them and they told me in a nice way to stop playing. I asked why and they said they suspected I was counting. I asked them if I had to leave the casino and they told me no, just stay off the tables. They were actually pretty cool about the whole thing. So I cashed in my $12,000 jumped in a taxi and off to the airport I went.

As XJ Man said it takes lots and lots of practice, it also takes the fun away from the game and it becomes more like work. You also must perfect basic strategy before even thinking about it. I've played A LOT of blackjack over the past 20 years and have been counting for 10 and am nowhere close to being perfect with it, I still make many mistakes. But for starters I would highly recommend a book called Million Dollar Blackjack by one of the greats Ken Uston. This book will teach you basic strategy and give you a good idea about counting, great book.

Go to the casino with 20k and hope to win 2k. Most people go with 2k and hope to win 20k. It usually doesn't work that way.

Here is how you count cards:

everything 9 and higher is -1 and everything 7 and lower is +1. Now what you have to do is watch what has been dealt and count using the +/- 1 scale. If you get a high count then place big bet because this means there are a lot of big/facecards left in the deck and the probablility of you drawing a big hand is a lot better. Its a lot harder said then done, a good way to do this is to cancel cards out. Say someone draws a 14, K 4...they cancel each other out, so you are back at 0. This is just the basics of counting cards, there is a lot more too it.

pick up a copy of David Sklansky blackjack book and he explains in depth how to count cards, probably the best blackjack book I've read. Also, check out 'Bringing down the house', its about the MIT students that took Vegas for MILLLIONS counting cards.

Brisbane, Australia. But like i say, i only play for fun and for small amounts. I think it was $15 dollar bets, which is what i play. I think at night it goes down to $5 minimum bets, but i've only been during the day. $500 is the max bet in the general area. I'm told there's a high rollers area, but it is a pretty small casino, so who knows. I've probably only played a total of 5 hours in the casino and i've only come up double aces twice, and it was both with the same dealer. So maybe it was just that particular dealer, but there was no mention of not being able to double on splits on the table rules or anything.

I've only ever been to Jupiters on the Gold Coast. I just came back from Sydney yesterday (I live in Melbourne), and I played a few hands of blackjack at StarCity Casino. I had a couple of hours to spare (I was waiting for 5:30 so that I could park my car for the weekend without paying $60 for the first night ), and won about $240 on the blackjack table. My bankroll was only like $40, so as a % it's a good win. I'm going to Crown Casino tonight, so I'll probably lose it all!

It's impossible to count cards here, they use an auto-shuffler which shuffles after each hand, and there are like 5-7 decks in the shuffler. But if you play basic strategy you can still have a decent winning margin. I chip up when I'm on a roll, and go back to the table minimum after a loss. In the even of a push/stand-off, I chip down 1 chip.
Treasury. It's the only casino in Brisbane, i believe. But believe it or not, both times i had two aces, split and doubled, i lost all four hands. What are the fucking odds of that? Then again, what are the odds of getting two double aces in a one hour sitting to begin with? lol.

They use automatic shufflers at Treasury too. Not sure how many decks.

I consistantly win at blackjack, but to be honest, it isn't any fun. The reason being, it's completely mechanical and takes hours upon hours to make any decent money. Then again, I know I'm going to come out ahead.

If you're willing to make that sacrafice of time, fun and enjoyment to know that you'll win, then I'd suggest

1) Know the odds, for every hand, depending on the size of the shoe and how deep into it you are.
2) Sit on the dealer's right, to maximize the number of cards from the shoe that you see before you decide your play. Short term it's meaningless, long term it means almost nothing.. but it does mean something.
3) Count cards. Read about other systems (particularily the MIT system) and then develop a method by which you can store the information in your head. It takes practice, but it's a lot easier than learning a language. You can do it at home or with friends & low stakes. They say that counting cards is forbidden, well maybe, but you're doing it in your head, not on a notepad.
4) Moderation. Don't drink too much, don't play too fast or too slow, and don't lose or win too much. If you're winning big, don't win too big.
4a) There's more going on in Vegas/Atlantic City/etc than card games.
4b) The casino's money isn't going anywhere, and there are plenty of casinos to play at. Win some at the Borgata, win some at the Trop, win some next month. The low profile of a steady winner is the way to be.
4c) Fit in. Don't wear a $1000 suit or buy a round of drinks for everyone at the table. Tip dealers/waitresses in a manner consistant with other players at the table.

Since you are asking for tips, sorry to say, but unless Lady Luck is on your side, you are likely to be a loser. So one of the most useful tips would be to make sure you find yourself a full table.

This has absolutely nothing to do with changing the odds, just a recognition of the reality that playing at a busy table means about one-quarter the games per hour as you would get at an empty table. You won't lose any less in the end, but you will get to play for longer...
