Did you guys miss the blackmail note from the russian mob?
It really doesn't cost much to run a botnet of about 50,000 bots or more. If whoever is doing it has any skills they can probably manage to do everything for free.

Oh and darren if you really want to find out whos packeting you all you need to do is collect ips of computers that are attacking you and check them for exploits. If a computer is open install some type of trojan on it and start sniffing packets. Wait for it to connect to irc or to recieve the .ping www.mensniche.com 80 0 50000 or something similer to that. Get the ip of the server and start doing as much digging as you can and try to find out what domain/dns its using and then call the cops in. Also if you have $20,000 or more in damages the fbi is willing to work with you but don't expect them to do all the work for you.

I may have missed it, but I didn't see you posting WHAT TYPE of attack you are experiencing.

If it id DOS or DDOS, that type of attack is not expensive. It is actually very cheap. For instance... I can scan networks in Asian, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, etc, for unsecured Cisco routers. Script something to take them over or just use them and not change the 'enable' password. If I take control of 400 (about a weeks worth of scanning) I can send you terabytes of data per second. Enough to not only knock you offline but also every server in the data center. If I scanned for 2 months with a 2nd PC I could control about 2000 to 3000 Ciscos and do a trace route. Then take out the provider of your BW (Cogent).

Another easy way is to go on the IRC. Enter 100 large chat rooms and spam codes that will give me access to peoples machines. You'd be surprised at how many people in other countries will click on ANYTHING that you put out there. After 2 months I can control 2000 machines easily. Now I can write something (or just Google for it and download it) and have these 2000 machines actively look for other machines by scanning IP ranges that are hackable with whatever the latest Windows flaw is. In another week I might have about 20,000 to 40,000 machines... Now I can DOS you with terabytes.

Personally, I think the Cisco way is easier.

If you are being hacked (as in HACKED and not attacked) then there is a whole other group of things that can be done to get there.

So are you being hacked or attacked?

The cost to actually do an attack like this, not just one attack but several is high, we have 2 teams working on tracking down the attacker (at an incredible expense of course!). Authorities are also following leads and slowly step by step getting closer. The people we have protecting the server now are the best by far and have dealt with attacks on EBAY in the past.

This type of attack is obviously NOT a kid having fun, according to the people we have who have dealt as mentioned with BIG takes before this is the most persistent and most advanced attack they have seen...

Pissed off ex employee? We would say NO, we have only ever let 2 people go.

Pissed off affiliate who we canned for doing fraud, the cost of this attack is too much.

So who does that leave??

BTW before hosts and other people suggest this attack is cheap and easily avoidable let me guarantee you it isn't , we have had at least 5 of the top hosts on this board try and stop or filter with no success etc etc.

Darren
Well Darren, I think you and your team would know better than anyone who might be behind this kind of attack. All I can speculate, is that it is either a very angry customer that ripped off his dick using sizegenetics and wants revenge, or 1 of your competitors. Which competitor though? Who knows.

Also, your host will make up excuse after excuse as to why they are not able to stop these attacks, but consider this. Google.com, microsoft.com, etc are some of the biggest websites on the net, and have some of the biggest nastiest competitors on the face of the planet. No doubt these same attacks which are keeping your server down, have been tried on those sites, yet they haver never gone down for a week straight.

Darren, dont worry too much though man. I know you and your team will sort this out and fix it in the end. Its just a matter of time. Your smart affiliates will stick with you, through thick and thin.

Hi Darren, you said you consulted with the top 5 hosts? I'm sure you spoke with Dweeks from Swiftwill.com. If you havent, he may have some insight/suggestions. He's excellent.

"Like the foes they pursue, online crusaders use the internet's anonymity, speed and international reach. Some work alone and in secret. Others such as Mr Weisburd have put together operations that run almost like companies. Their causes vary from stopping spam, holding companies accountable for poor products or service, investigating murders, and fighting terrorism and other crimes."

A bit of a coincidence, this is an article in today's smh.

Anyone who would seriously want to attack you at this moment in time, would be using a DRDoS (Distributed Reflected Denial of Service) attack method

If it's Dos or DDos, it can easily just be 'some kid'. As others above said, it wouldn't cost him anything to sustain such an attack for a week. However, if you have pros working on it, they should have stopped it by now.

Thus, it's likely a DRDoS, which means the person knows what he is doing.....

Yes, and he said he used 5 hosts to try and curb it. Andry stopped such an attack that was affecting swiftco.net. So I mentioned it... Seems easy enough to figure out why I posted it, but that is just my POV.

If you all cant track down the people doing the attack thats sad, Because in order to get that much bandwidth in a stream you would need to hacked computers which means EXPLOIT HOLES..

I think it was hydro that said, Find a few IP's that are sending attacks, Most likely they are SYN, ICMP, PING, and other forms of malformed data..

Once you got a few IP's of the ones that have sent a decent size amount of data that dont look like "surfers" go buy a copy of eEye Retina Scanner, Hell you might just hire them guys they are in Cali, Bunch of odd colored hair, pierced of hacker nerds that own a good company..

They write some of the finest white papers on exploits..

To say this costs MONEY to make this attack is utter bullshit, Back when a "ddos bot" was popular before the creator got arrested AGOBOT aka PhatBot it had some exploits in it for spreading that didnt even have white papers on so they was unheard of and they wasnt being fixed, I remember him unleasing that bastard and he would pull in 100k computers world wide in a day, They didnt site on a irc server like most kiddies bots they would network via p2p..

100,000 Computers with a 3mb cable could throw damn close to 3750GB's of traffic at you, Now 100,000 is usally a small number for people that deal in ddos bots, spammers are good sources of ddos bots because you can use them for proxies and sell the proxies in lists because they are stable..

Now rule out another; Have you banned any big time spammers from your program lately? Because if a spammer is big enough you bet your ass he has a botnet himself thats good sized or he has friends that has botnets..

I've seen 200,000 drones of pure T1's ONLY for ddos purposes.. And these was just some younger kids in the teens 16 at most playing with this shit, They play around with this shit and when they get so many they divide up the good speed ones and use them for warez dumps or what not..

Use 200k drones on T1's to spit at your serves thats going to send a shit storm..

Remember the CNN Attacks? Those werent done for any money reason it was just some kids that have way to much time to play with on summer vacation..

Sorry if this post leads off and on in diffrent directions just typing as i think..

If you would like some help on trying to track them down i can do my best...

Cheers.
