Tech question for hosting companies
I had very slow FTP & HTTP downloads. They fixed it, saying:

Is it a hardware issue that the tech in the data centre had to address?? Is it due to a bad setup ? Answers would be appreciated....

If it's on the server, yeah you could have easily fixed it. If on the switch, they'd have to...Sounds like it was on the server and you could have fixed it within a few seconds if you knew how.

Sounds like the switch port for your server was on wasnt configured for full-duplex, usually its autoset, it wasnt, they updated it, just a one-time switch config issue. Assuming thats what it was you would need switch access to update it yourself.

I don't have physical switch access, the server being in a datacentre far from my base. So it seems that I couldn't have done nothing myself. or am I wrong. Thanks guys.

It can be on both sides actually, the switch and your server will try to negociate half or full duplex, if the server says 'half' then the switch will settle for this. The speed on the server side is configured by the os and/or network card drivers, so yes if it was your server that was configured half-duplex, you could have fixed it in ssh. But if it was the switch that was configured half-duplex, then you couldn't have done anything; assuming the switch is owned by the hosting company and not you..
