Well, I came across this thread by accident but becuase I was in your shoes a few months ago and have just made a purchase, I'll give you a few pointers...but it comes down to what you want in a CamCorder...
I looked at JVC, Sony and Panasonic. I was looking for a camcorder that DID NOT come with a built in 'printer' or 'digital camera' capabilities...but would be wiling to forgo that for a good price...I was a bit prone to staying with Sony, but only from a 'namebrand' point of view. I was also looking at the 'digital zoom' and knew I wanted at least 20x and since I'm not a big fan of small ass LCD screens, then I wanted to get at least 3' or 3.5' inches.. My budget was about what yours was so I went ahead and got the Sony DCR-TRV530... Depending on where you live, I'd say your nearest camera store should carry it! I'm looking forward to taking this little phucker to mardi gras with me next month..should be a blast...since I only had a digital camera last year! Hope this helps! Later, TekArt |

the trv900 is a 3 chip camera make sure you get a 3 chip you basicly have 2 choices in your $ range: the Sony trv900 or the Cannon GL there are no other 3 chip DV Cams out there that I know of in this range. The sony you can get at bhphoto.com for around 1500 bucks. check it out you wont find it cheaper new with even 10% of the same customer service. the cannon is a little more pricey and has more zoom and a few extra features, and is a little over you budget, that's why i didn't mention it previously. ------------------ BikiniVoyeur: 50% Payouts Weekly! I would go for the Cannon GL1 in that range.
Look for it on ebay for a good price. Shalom Spankstrocko |

What BV said. trv900. I've seen it going for as little as $1200. A $50 Firewire board is all you need if your computer doesn't have Firewire built in. It's just a file transfer - no capture needed. Do all mpeg encoding in software - it's slower but higher quality, sorta like rendering in 3D the software has more "intelligence" to create a higher quality file.
To see what the trv900 can do for output go rent a few DreamGirls: Real Adventures DVDs from Evil Angel. The trv900 is the cam the guys use. Joey Silvera also uses the trv900 for his EA titles. One thing: if you use Windoze buy a Win2000 or XP box. These OSs can handle large files better than the 9x versions that need funky software tricks to edit files larger than 4GB. ------------------ (o)Y(º) <- bad boob job |

ps Compared to the gl the trv900 has a more low-key "party video" form factor. Looks more like a generic sony consumer cam.

XL1s are just too sexy looking. They remind me of the old 8mm newsreel cameras.

Go with the Sony TRV30 - You can get one on-line for around 1,000 bucks - It also takes digital still at 1.5 mega pixels. I've got one and I love it. Good Luck - Charlie
