vbulletin, has anyone tried installing it on multiple domains with one license?

Is it a no no? Did you get caught? Do they shut you down somehow?

I don't really have any intention of doing it, but it peaks my interest. If you do use it on more than one domain, what can they do? Just stop offering support? Or actually make your vbulletin no longer function?

they've got a full time lawyer that sends out complaints to the ISPS, and, yeah, you probably will get caught since the software "calls home" unless you are using a pirated version thats stripped of that

Interesting... I've been working on various methods to have it check these things in my scripts. I always like to see how other scripts are doing it. I'll have to look into their inner workings some more and see what they do.

No, it looks like a place where we can exchange info on better safe guarding our work to prevent others from pirating our scripts.

Thanks for the name calling though. You're really very clever.

They're pretty useless unless you are using something like zend or ioncube to encode the source, since it's rather trivial to remove them.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too.... there has to be a way to work it so that it won't function without it... and it still has to be checked.
If you can work it to be complicated enough, sure other programmers could figure it out, but the average joe couldn't. If you can stop 99%, that's good enough right?

The problem is the same as ip banning on membership paysites, if it accidently fucks up and makes things NOT work for someone it should you have just created a problem for the legit person not the bad guy.

Yeah, the best bet is to use obfuscation for that. you could possible code up some custom function to hide the code in an encrypted string, along with other functions that are critcal for the script to function, and then use the eval function to exec the string.

here's a pretty good example of a good obfuscation
Code:
perl -e "push @x,ord()-32 for split'','Z=!;g&7?<:*5gI5:>oO&:;- c';split'','phroggy'x4;print chr^shift @_ for @x,109"
you would probably have no clue that it would print "Just another Perl Hacker"

they dont report u to an isp if u use an illegal version.

i once used a pirated version of vb, and i got caught. all they did was send me an email saying i had 7 days to buy or remove. so i bought it, and that was all.

I used to send the same email message to people using my scripts illegally. Then after about 10 days I emailed their host. The host contacts the customer and asks them to remove the script or pay for it. If they don't comply, the host shuts them down. I only had one host refuse to cooperate with me and they got a letter from my attorney. They were happy to comply after that.
