I usually like Fairmont Hotels because they tend to be grand buildings in great locations. But the Queen Elizabeth is in the middle of downtown, with no particular view and 1960's style architecture. I'd suggest taking all look at some of these hotels:

Hotel St. James
http://www.hotellestjames.com/pages/home.htm

Auberge du Vieux Port
http://www.aubergeduvieuxport.com/

Hotel St. Paul
http://www.hotelstpaul.com/en/description.asp
(shitty website)

Hotel Gault

De La Montagne hotel is also pretty nice, and it's very close to the centre of downtown.

Hyatt is nice, on St.Catherine & JeanneMance so in between Cresent & St.Laurent the main bar streets. (further from central downtown)

The Vogue on DeLaMontagne is nice too & connected to Thursdays on Cresent.

The Queen E is always really nice too. Central also.

The Sheraton I havent been to but its Stanley & ReneLevesque I think so its close also.

but yeah, most of the main hotels are really nice so hard to get a bad one

a new hotel opened called Sofitel , it has high speed, pretty upscale, very very nicely decorated. The Queen E is old school, and Delta is ok, but the Sofitel is right near Crescent also. The W is very good too, but it's a bit farther away.

It's a very posh hotel in Old Montreal. When Rolling Stones performed here last year, they rented out the entire hotel for the night.

The W and Hotel Godin are two brand new, spiffy hotels. The W is in Old Montreal, 2 or 3 blocks away from Hotel St James and the Delta where Cybernet Expo was held. Hotel Godin is on the corner of Sherbrooke and St-Laurent, which is literally the heart of the city.

Hotel Godin is party owned by the Montreal mob (so I hear) so I'd be careful not to make any damage if I were to stay there

Everything is partly owned by the mob ;)

Actually, it's owned by the people who own Buena Notte and Globe. The hotel is gorgeous and the technology is top notch. My ex's dad actually set up all the computer systems there.

The downside is the city won't give them a liquor license... no alcohol in the hotel whatsoever. Even the mini-bars are dry.

And who you think owns Buena Notte and Globe?
Actually Godin is owned by three groups: The Quebec government (thru CDP Caiptal), Langlois (founder of Softimage) and the people of Buena Notte (like you like to call them).
