Why Does WebAir Take 404 Traffic?

I was surfing a site and got a 404 and went to a default webair 404 page.

Now, i know they arent a free host so where in their terms does it say that unless the webmasters creates a custom 404.

I read the FAQ and didnt find it.

What if the webmaster wants his 404's to go to the default This Page Can Not Be Displayed.

Then what?

Right i understand it going to like
Not Found
The requested URL /sd was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
But to thier own 404 page.
I figured free hosts do that but not paid

And WG, the 24/7 support isnt being helpful.

I've never seen that before on a webair server. Perhaps you were surfing a site owned by webair, or someone who works there. Or maybe that's the default for virtual accounts, who knows.

No. It was a friend that used to host there and he paid for his virtual. And i was intrigued at why the 404 went to webair.

I dont know what made me think about it today.

Most hosting companies default thier 404 to their own 404 page ... they allow you to overwrite this with .htaccess

It's nothing new and it don't matter paid or free hosting ... if you don't counteracxt it on your domain with your own .htaccess file then it's up for grabs and the hosting comapny grabs it.

I understand taht. And its not like a simple .htaccess couldnt fix it for the webmaster.

This is just the fisrt hosting company ive seen do this with paid accounts.

They arent stealing traffic per se because it can be changed t your 404 page, but i find it odd. JMO

It's really not rare ... most hosting companies do it. Not many of the adult hosts. But most hosts in general do it. I do it on 2 of my servers that do mainstream hosting.

None of our 404 pages ever went to anything other than a standard apache 404 page. Do you have a screenshot of the page you were sent to?

I am curious if there's a difference regarding the 404 page standard setup between virtual and dedicated plans?

If you are asking for an SS of my 404 pages, they are all custom. However, prior to us setting up the custom pages for Arika they were all the standard Apache formet.

SplitInfinity does not do this.

Just my 2cents but I do not think its a cool thing to do to clients.
Sometimes ya draw a wrong link and bang the traffic goes to promote someone elses 404 page ya just lost a visitor.

Its a bad practice.

Yea. I think its only on virtual plans. The support told me that most have the default linux 404 page. Meaning some have the webair 404 page.

It's not bad, I'd rather use theirs than pay $30/month for each copy of cpanel. What can you do with cpanel that you can't do with webair's control panel?
