Your preferred way of showing proof of income?

Whenever either renting, applying for a car loan, obtaining a mortgage, what is your preferred and in your opinion easiest way of showing proof of income from being an affiliate of paysites?

Also this is for people who are self employed, not incorporated because I know those folks just write checks out to themselves just as in a "real company"

I already know the most common ways are:

- Income tax returns (but sometimes you might not have recent ones because taxes were filed late or sometimes people are behind on their taxes)

- Bank statements showing monthly deposits (but certain banks only show the total number amount of money deposited per statement. Some institutions want to actually see each single deposit and the name of the company that the deposit or check was from)

- Check stubs (Might be complicated because some people promote lots of sponsors. Of course you can always show your "major" checks only, but also some companies have very blatant "porn related" names that are obviously related to adult companies, or company names that could easily identified with adult business with a simple Google search. In certain cases it is more prudent to be discreet with prudish type people? What to do if the names on all your major checks are obviously adult related?)

I know that it also depends on what you are doing and what they actually require of you; every situation is different. But in general, how do you get around it?

i usually do bank statements or check stubs....had to do check stubs for our new house...that was funny, i had like 14 stubs that month...but fact is, they don't care how you get the money, as long as you have it and it is legal

In Canada, I believe the only universally accepted form of proof-of-income is your CRA notice of assessment (ie. tax return). I've never been able to apply for a loan with one.

I suppose some local credit unions and car financiers might accept less, but good luck at borrowing real money with it.

the tax return is the best proof, IMHO. Never had any problems with that...

No one I have ever done business with would accept a bank statement as proof of income. I could make $20K a year and have two bank accounts and transfer money back and forth to make it look like I made 10 times that by just showing them one account.

I'm incorporated and I've always showed my income tax returns as proof of income. If you don't have then, they're lost, you haven't filed, etc. you have bigger problems than just showing proof of income

We use tax returns as proof of income.

But, when we bought our house a few years ago, they required both the tax returns and twelve months worth of bank statements, both personal and business.

The problem you stated about them being filed late isn't an issue really.
Its April 8 right now...so if I were to apply for a loan that wanted proof of income I would just use the previous year's tax return.

However, the mortgage company is the only place that wanted proof of income, for car loans and credit cards etc....they've never asked.

When I rented my house, they didn't ask questions. I told them self employed, they just asked for first, last, and security, and it was not a problem, so that was that.

Sounds like they're pretty tight, isn't the bond meant to cover that? Last time I rented I had to add an extra month's worth of rent as bond.

tax returns and bank statements, sometimes both are good, but if you're credit score sucks it doesn't really matter anyway.
