Likewise Halcyon, you were on the top of the list of people I was wanting to buy a drink...

Guess I'll be buying you 2 drinks to make up for it at Internext ;)

Damn, what a shitty story. All it takes is one pesky gnat to ruin a great weekend ... There can be 20 agents on duty and if you end up with the clown, it's good night.

I remember I took a connecting flight to Frankfurt through Minnesota 2 years ago (I missed my original flight, long story) and was going to be in the USA for literally 90 minutes - not even time to leave the terminal, never mind the airport.

Whether it was because I was a single man who in the Summer can pass for Middle Eastern, or this guy was just being an ass, he grilled me as well. I finally told him "I'm not GOING to the US, I'm only passing through as I have NO CHOICE! I MISSED MY ORIGINAL FLIGHT!!!"

Anyway, he finally let me go but I could tell he was just trying to make me sweat for a bit, taking advantage of the fact I was already stressed for missing my original flight.

Major league "I Got The Power" syndrome.

This is correct. I was arrested as a minor for vandalism and it was wiped clean off my record when I turned 18. Since it's a misdemeanor, it'll only appear in court records and nowhere else. Cops or customs agents cannot see a record of it. You're not supposed to consider it as a prior arrest.

I spent over two hours at customs on Monday night. The agent asked me literally dozens of questions, searched my bags and spent a long time looking me up in the computers. Nothing was ever mentioned regarding my arrest as a minor, and when he asked about prior arrests, I said none.

Hey Andy, Since 911 they have been real ass's at the border. Drug and assault charges are number one on their stop list. Even if you have a pardon in Canada the U.S. does not recognize it.
My friends with past records apply for waivers before they head down. It's kind of like being pre approved to travel south. You might have to look into it before heading south again.

digi 04-01-2005 10:38 PM

Im a swedish citizen and Ive basically lived in Canada for one and a half years now with just my passport. Im actually amazed they still let me in :1orglaugh

Ya they gave me the waiver forms to fill out... said with some luck it will only take 4 months :(

Nope, it is very valuble. He will receive paperwork showing that he has received a full pardon. When shown to the U.S. customs they have no choice but to back off, because a full pardon is exactly that, a pardon and it can no longer be held against you.

A friend of mine was bascially in the same situation as this guy, constantly hassled by U.S. customs over a teenage pot conviction. He went for the full pardon, received it and the next time he went over the border and customs hassled it he whipped out the full pardon and they back off. It has been about 5 years now since he showed customs his pardon and they made a copy of it and they have never pulled him aside since.

shitty deal bro. A little while ago me and my father were travelling over seas and had a stop over in the states. My father is arab, and he was going back home to Morocco with the intent of buying a condo there. Long storey, but in short he had to bring cash. So he had 60k in cash, all in a money belt. Trust me, if you're an arab, with 60k in cash, dont try and cross the US border LOL.

anyway, sucks that it killed your weekend, but like a lot of others have pointed out, it could be worse.

God man... I was stuck with some guys driving the bus for NatNet almost 2 years ago trying to cross the border into canada in NY. These people have a complete ego trip on themselves. We got flagged cause, stupidly, I told them I was going to montreal for biz. They pulled us into the station and were asking me and my friend about our records, which we had none. The guy ran our shit, then flipped out about arrests years earlier that didn't even result in convictions and were dropped for both of us. They denied us entry so we had to take a route through vermont(thanks dugmor). There we both said we were there for liesure and all was well.

That dude had such a "I have a hardon" face at the new york crossing. Fucking disgusting. ya, I'm trying to pull one over on him because of an arrest that didn't result in a conviction or even a plea.

Bear in mind, I've just stepped off the plane, carrying only my hand luggage.

Customs agent: Can I have your passport
Me: Sure.
Customs agent: Purpose of visit?
Me: Seeing some old friends, having a few meetings and just looking around.
Him: What meetings?
Me: Just seeing some work colleagues.
Him: What are their names, who do they work for?
Me: Uhh...
Him: You're required to tell me this information. Do you have proof of your meetings? I need to see their business cards, contact details, and a letter of confirmation of your meetings.
Me: I've just stepped off a 30 hour flight, I don't have this information on me.
Him: Well, that's just another problem you have then, isn't it.
Me: Uhhh..
Him: These friends you're staying with. Where do they live.
Me: I'm not sure, I've never stayed with them in the UK before. I'm meeting them in arrivals.
Him: They're your friends and you don't know where they live? Sounds like a pretty weak excuse to me.
Him: How much money do you have in your wallet?
Me: What does that have to do with anything?
Him: I need to know how much you have.
Me: About 60 Pounds.
Him: And you're staying for 2 weeks, right?
Me: Right.
Him: That's not much money for 2 weeks. How were you planning to stay?
Me: I have my VISA.
Him: A VISA isn't cash - that's not sufficent proof that you have enough funds to sustain yourself. How much is on your card?
Me: That's none of your business
Him: Yes, it is.
Me: Let me ask you something. How much money do you have in your pocket?
Him: I don't have to answer that.
Me: Humour me.
Him: 20 Pounds
Me: And you live here permanently? Damn, how do you sustain yourself on 20 pounds?
Him: Stop being smart:
Me: Seriously man, what's you're case? I'm Australian. I've just gone through immigration in 5 countries including the middle east before here, and they couldn't care less about how much money I had in my damn wallet.
Him: ...
Me: So can I come through?
Him: *Calls colleague over, chats, walks off, comes back with a big red stamp.
Him: I'm letting you in, under a Code 3 Stamp.
Me: And that means?
Him: We will be monitoring you throughout the duration of your stay. If you do not leave within your two weeks, we will track you down.
Me: You've stamped my passport for 6 months
Him: Two weeks!
Me: Ok, remind me next time when I come through to say I'm going to go see the palace and feed the pigeons, ok?
Him: *Smirks - Oh no! Don't do that, we're happy to have you here.

Now, not to be paranoid, but every time I made a phone call in the UK, the unlock icon on my phone kept appearing - indicating that GSM encryption had been turned off for that call. It continued for a week after I left the UK, then went back to normal.

I swear customs guys are complete arseholes - I feel for you man.

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh Too damn funny

This shit shouldn't be a surprise. My wife just told me (she works for Canadian Defense Department) on the Government's website there is a big help wanted ad looking for high school students and college interns to come work as border guards, immigration officers and customs agents for the summer.

So kids get to make the judgement on potentially life-altering issues at borders. Anybody see a problem with giving some kids, who have never had any real power, the kind of power they have at the border crossings?

Wouldn't doubt if the U.S. does the exact same thing, hiring kids etc.

My brother had a criminal record and the US didn't recognize his Canadian pardon for a minor drug offence. He had to apply for a waiver.

all U.S. customs agents are dickheads.

when coming back from a cruise to bahamas they had to check my bags and my id.

i walk up to the booth with the customs agent and say "good morning buddy."

and he looks at me hard as hell and says "BUDDY? BUDDY? TRY UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HOMELAND SECURITY OFFICER. BLAH LBHA LBHAL BLHAL".

I was thinking, WTF? Haha then i was on my way.

US is worse, I just read an article the other day about it.

They are allowing armed volunteers to patrol the Us/mexican border!

Buncha bible thumpin hicks that will probably shoot first, ask questions later.

hershie 04-02-2005 03:13 PM

I tried to cross into Cambodia from Vietnam at a brand new border crossing that had just opened up and I had spent 3 days going up the Mekong river to reach it and realized I lost my exit visa, which was supposedly a big deal in Vietnam. My boat driver said the border guards would probably make me go all the way back to Saigon to deal with it. When I got to the border it was empty since it was so new and remote, and the Vietnam guard told my driver that if I bought him a carton of cigarettes at the stand over there, he would let me through. So I basically bribed my way into Cambodia.

What do you mean allowing? They operate within the law...if and when they violate the law they will be arrested. What they are doing is a good thing...since the Government is failing the people in this AO.

I found Canadian Immigration to be arrogant, and racist - and I'm white.

What is the term for it, positive discrimination or something?

I got hassled once by US customs when a flight from toronto got cancelled and I had to get on a Brazilian flight to NY and then join British Airways from there.

The guy couldn't understand that I was going to be in the US for all of 3-4 hours.

:Oh crap

WWC-DonMike 04-04-2005 10:16 AM

Andy, I'm so sorry to hear about this. I can't imagine making all those plans, getting all excited, and having it all trashed like that. I hope all works out for Hollywood and you get here with no problems.

And good for you for not letting that customs jerk get away with it. Do everything you can to get him fired. You're probably not the first person who he's messed up.
