Gas prices and a question about gas....

Last night I filled up my tank and was hit with a $2.36 per gallon price. Ouch.

Here's my question:

I live in Phoenix, our gas is made in California, and we have one pipeline that supplies gas to Phoenix. Last summer this single pipeline broke and was shut down, closing down gas stations for nearly two weeks - Phoenix had no gas to buy anywhere.

So our gas all comes through one pipeline, and is sold by all the different gas stations locally. Does this mean the gas I buy at the AM/PM is the same exact gas as what I buy at Chevron or Exxon?

I was also surprised to see 2.37 last night here. Dunno about the pipes.

The gas is the almost the same from copany to company. Some companies have a slightly higher octane level than others and some have additives for anti-pollution/cleaner burning properties.

The biggest difference in gas is dependent on the area that it's in. Ie. The gas you buy in Florida is much different than the gas you buy in Alaska, it's made to combust at different temperatures/altitudes.

It's $2.07 regular where I live. BUT in the next town south a new Kroger opened and is selling gas for $1.79 so at least 2 other places in that town are selling for the same price It's on my way to Atlanta so I time it where I can fill up there.

Since we're considered a "resort" area, we're almost always 10-15 cents a gallon higher than the burbs of Atlanta. And you know it doesn't cost any more to get it to here than it does to Atlanta.

BTW, just talked to my son in Japan - he's buying gas on base for $2.06! Incredible - it's about $3.50 off base.

Michigan gas

$2.39/2.26 a gallon.

As for your question,.. each state ironically enough has different restrictions on gasoline. For example, Cali gas has to be much cleaner than a lot of other states, but then there are a number of different factors. Some has diffferent octanes, and cleaner additives, etc.

So the short answer would be no, all gas is not the same.

This is ridiculous. My truck gets 17 mpg avg. This blows. I remember the days of sub $1.00 gallons of gas. That wasn't that long ago.

Something has to give. There is no reason why gas should be $2.00+ a gallon.

The cost of gas really isn't high compared to inflation. In March of 1981, gasoline cost $3.08 a gallon, adjusted for inflation.

Also different states impose different taxes. For instance, GA has one of the lowest taxes on gas.

Back to my question - The gas I buy at Exxon is the same I'd buy at any other gas station here in PHoenix?

Where did you get that info on the pipeline. Maybe natural gas is piped into on a single line. But I highly doubt all the liquid petroleum for a city as big as Phoenix is coming in on a single pipeline.

And no, refined gas from one refinery is not mixed with another oil company's.

From http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/brochure/gas04/gasoline.htm

Quote:
Can I tell which country or State the gasoline at my local station comes from?

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) cannot definitively say where gasoline at a given station originated since EIA does not collect data on the source of the gasoline sold at retail outlets. The name on the service station sign does not tell the whole story. The fact that you purchase gasoline from a given company does not necessarily mean that the gasoline was actually produced by that particular company?s refineries. While gasoline is sold at about 167,000 retail outlets across the nation, about one-third of these stations are ?unbranded? dealers that may sell gasoline of any brand. The remainder of the outlets are ?branded? stations, but may not necessarily be selling gasoline produced at that company?s refineries. This is because gasoline from different refineries is often combined for shipment by pipeline, and companies owning service stations in the same area may be purchasing gasoline at the same bulk terminal. In that case, the only difference between the gasoline at station X versus the gasoline at station Y may be the small amount of additives that those companies add to the gasoline before it gets to the pump. Even if we knew at which company?s refinery the gasoline was produced, the source of the crude oil used at that refinery may vary on a day-to-day basis. Most refiners use a mix of crude oils from various domestic and foreign sources. The mix of crude oils can change based on the relative cost and availability of crude oil from different sources.

Arizona has no refineries...
but I believe there is more than one pipe in the pipelines...
and there is also a Texas pipeline to AZ

here I found a link
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1318576/posts

It does fry me, however.. that I can go to my house in Parker AZ... and gas there is 30 cents cheaper than here in LA area... where its all made.
however, a great deal of this cost difference is taxes from AZ to CA.

No it is not because when the companies get the gas they filter and add differnt additives to it, so the gas is slightly differnt.

Yeah, I'll agree with you. Lots of us in the industry have big Hummers, etc, and I kind of laugh of them - That's a huge tank that sucks up gas like there is no tomarrow and it is kind of pointless.

My wife drives an Explorer. It cost $45 to fill up, but she really commutes to and from work it will last her two or three weeks.

gasoline costs about 50 cents a gallon to produce, the rest of the price you pay is taxes.
never bithch about he tax on gas or cigaretts or liquor do you?
anytime the politicians need money to fund something its gas, smokes and booze.
and no one ever bitches.
if the gas keeps going up it will cause inflation and then the shit will hit the fan.
the cost to produce goods and deliver them to the store will be passed on to the consumer.
