Do fonts carry a copyright?

well do they? are they free to distribute?

i would imagine that a document might not display properly and therefore u need them on other computers as well.

I believe fonts are like content - you download for your use, marketing, personl or otherwise. If you are doing print work, it's irrelevant for other PCs but if you are writing a document to share (or web page), you likely cannot distribute the font unless it has an open licence or none at all.

There are thousands of free fonts out there, just read the fine print. If you buy one it most certainly will have T&Cs included.

yes they do from what I have heard. And it is a lucrative business if you get one copyright and then licensed by a program that uses it.

i'd assume all fonts are copyrighted.

i don't see why creating a font would be any different from creating another piece of work.

Read the text file that comes zipped with the font. A lot of fonts on 1001 fonts you can only use for personal use and have to pay a fee to use commercially.

In short, Yes.

Anything that anybody creates is copyrighted however, if they choose to uphold or waive that copyright is up to them

Lee

i guess what i was aiming for is that are we free to distribute them?

I think this is why new times roman is the standard default font, isn't it?

Um, im pretty sure you mean "trademark"... fonts use trademark to be protected, while copyright refers to text context.

Actually i beleive the 'name' of the font is what can be 'trademarked' the font itself would classify as a work of 'art' and therefore be covered under copyright law.

Interestingly enough though, i wonder if anyone has trademarked their font names

Regards,

Lee

Of course a font carries copyright. A font is a creation, and a creation carries copyright, unless the author of the creation says it doesn't.

Yes, all fonts are copywritten. Most free fonts are only free for personal use, and not commericial use.
