Do fonts carry a copyright?

well do they? are they free to distribute?

i would imagine that a document might not display properly and therefore u need them on other computers as well.

I believe fonts are like content - you download for your use, marketing, personl or otherwise. If you are doing print work, it's irrelevant for other PCs but if you are writing a document to share (or web page), you likely cannot distribute the font unless it has an open licence or none at all.

There are thousands of free fonts out there, just read the fine print. If you buy one it most certainly will have T&Cs included.

some fonts carry a copyright, some do not. check out www.1001fonts.com for some good free ones.

AdultLocals_Max 03-08-2005 10:30 PM

yes they do from what I have heard. And it is a lucrative business if you get one copyright and then licensed by a program that uses it.

www.dafont.com is WAY better and more organized

psyko514 03-08-2005 10:32 PM

i'd assume all fonts are copyrighted.

i don't see why creating a font would be any different from creating another piece of work.

nofx 03-08-2005 10:33 PM

im pretty sure they are

nice i haven't saw that one yet. i just use 1001 fonts because it was the first site i found wayy back when.

Read the text file that comes zipped with the font. A lot of fonts on 1001 fonts you can only use for personal use and have to pay a fee to use commercially.

In short, Yes.

Anything that anybody creates is copyrighted however, if they choose to uphold or waive that copyright is up to them :)

id assume so

reynold 03-08-2005 10:45 PM

Almost everything in the world has copyright.

clickclickclick 03-08-2005 10:48 PM

i guess what i was aiming for is that are we free to distribute them?
but i see that is a case by case analysis.

Rochard 03-09-2005 12:13 AM

I think this is why new times roman is the standard default font, isn't it?

azteq 03-09-2005 12:26 AM

Um, im pretty sure you mean "trademark"... fonts use trademark to be protected, while copyright refers to text context.

azteq 03-09-2005 12:30 AM

Oh, btw, dont quote me on that... and if you ever do, at least quote me saying "dont quote me on that..."

Actually i beleive the 'name' of the font is what can be 'trademarked' the font itself would classify as a work of 'art' and therefore be covered under copyright law.

Interestingly enough though, i wonder if anyone has trademarked their font names :winkwink:

Lee

there are lots of fonts that are free...I know I wouldnt pay for a font

adultguus 03-09-2005 02:21 AM

Of course a font carries copyright. A font is a creation, and a creation carries copyright, unless the author of the creation says it doesn't.

aico 03-09-2005 04:37 AM

Yes, all fonts are copywritten. Most free fonts are only free for personal use, and not commericial use.

sumphatpimp 03-09-2005 04:52 AM

who is going to go into court and admit to finding the font they created while surfing for porn?
the callouses on your palm tell a tale.
