Some friends of mine threw out the idea tonight at a bar as a joke, but after we got talking, it seemed pretty feasible.

One of the guys just got some money from a dead relative, about $70k, and he's willing to invest however much it takes. I figure we could place an ad in some alternative newspapers to hire girls, get a decent digital camera, some lights and mics and write a script (gee that won't be very hard)

I've been an adult webmaster for a little over 3 years, and my question is this:

Could I make more money creating a paysite with the content we film or should I try to produce VHS tapes to sell to porn vendors?
For the latter, how would I actually go about getting the finished product on the shelf of video stores across the country??

If you wish to create movies for general sale and want to actually move product, you need a distributor. Depending on the niche, you can expect between $3 and $10 per tape.

You will want to get set up with an agency for talent unless you are going the find strippers route.

You may want to consider taking your movies (or some of them) and selling it as content to others.

When you do produce your own content, there is many options.

As far as more money, that depends on your connections. Since you are obviously just starting and don't know a lot with the video side of the industry, you may want to form a game plan that consists of multiple parts and expand or venture more into one area as you go.

Just for reference sake, I have been in the industry for almost 8 years and did lots of movies and shoots in CA. However, I stopped filming a couple years ago.

Also make sure you understand all the legalities involved with content production.

If you have the whole $70K budget, I'd suggest a good digital video camera and shoot more for the web than video cassette...while shooting the video product, set up still shoots for the girls during "down times" and it probably wouldn't hurt to see about becoming a content distributor, though that is getting almost as crowded as the home video market, so you'll need a hook...
it probably wouldn't even hurt to hire a good luighting technician to light your sets or take a course at your local community college and learn the importance of lighting, sets, etc. of course depending upon your level of experience, your local resources and what your ultimate goal is. You should have a pretty solid game plan in place before even spending that first dollar...

I'd recommend reading up on all the different resource sites. Lots of picture and film producers have written articles on the subject, they might help you decrease your learning curve and answer questions. Start with http://www.pornresource.com and look through their article archive, it's quite extensive. I know there's lots of how-to articles that may be a good start.

It's not as easy as eveybody thinks and every man and his dog seems to be getting in on making videoas these days.

I seriously believe that if you intend to make any money then you will have to shoot something that is really different - niche or some shit that is just weird.
There's way too many ppl filming 'straight' porn and unless you got really big buck to spend and lots of contacts in the industry you'll probably have a hrad time grossing dollar one.
selling the vids as content might not be such a bad idea and if you do decide to go that way and you need a broker let me know!
