Dating sites-----------is this a possible threat?

"Vest is the chief executive of True.com, an online dating service that pledges to verify whether your dream date is a convicted felon or, worse yet, already married. "

"Vest has managed to convince legislators in states including California, Texas, Virginia, and Michigan to sponsor bills that would target rival dating sites like Match.com, Yahoo Personals, Spring Street Networks, craigslist and eHarmony."

Good for him to use that 'feature' but he goes too far trying to get legislation to help him.

That's all we need, more dumb laws.

If they turn that into law then they should also make sure the applicant is not lying in their personals ad.
I mean, an 'average' woman should not be >= 200 lbs.

Yes, it is a threat.

But it won't succeed.

We won't let it.

There are a number of rational CEOs in the dating biz who understand the STUPIDITY and SHORTSIGHTEDNESS of telling people they're in imminent danger of chemical warfare attack, just so you can sell them a few gas masks.

When you make people afraid, they might pay you to give them a feeling of safety -- for a little while. But, eventually, they just go live somewhere else.

This was the subject of very heated discussion at the i-date Conference in Miami last month.

ya ok! good luck. it will never work out. makes me think that chief executive of True.com either does not know anything about internet, or he has some sort of solution that will be available only to him, thus taking over the market. i am leaning towards the first one.

I've always thought dating services were a nightmare for women. If I were a serial killer, that would be the first place I'd go, lol.

90% of the men who use DATING sites are married, if you want to find true love go to eharmony, that site is full of religious nutjobs! Keep the honesty there, but don't make it mandatory for everyone else. When you want a blow job or a quick fuck, most dont care if the person providing the service is married or not (not me personally, but I'm sure there are most who just dont care, like the ones who are also married & looking).

C'mon, Holly...

When I was sitting up on that Panel at i-date with the idiot President of True.com (Ruben Buell), I told a little story about a Country Mouse who moves to the city... to make my point.

The Internet is a NEW place. And, yes, it's kinda scary for many people, for all the ways it little resembles the places they know and understand.

But I would rather teach people the ways of the Internet, teach them to be wily and careful and to recognize the special perils there -- in other words, to make them STRONG.

What these idiots (like Ruben Buell) are espousing is that people should be afraid, that the nature of the perils on the Web ARE sufficiently different from our experience and sufficiently indefensible by the average person, that Big Brother (as quasi-governmental agencies and Government, itself) ought to have a role in protecting us from them.

And once we open up THAT door, my friends, we shall never get it shut again.

He's going to prevent married people from dating is that the idea?
At least 30% or more of married women cheat and more married men.
We've been serving that market for over six years.
What adults do in the privacy of their own bedrooms in no Governments business.

I would be very suspicous of a company with a name like "True".

Maybe he should create legislation to end world hunger, homelessness, cancer or something. Laws are not the answers to all problems. If an adult wants some Sex on the side that's their own business.

Sounds like they are opening up a big bag of potential liability. I don't think any dating site wants to be in a lawyer's crosshairs for a class action lawsuit.

I just read that article on cnet --

"Those sites would be required to stamp this stark warning atop every e-mail and personal ad, in no less than 12-point type: "WARNING: WE HAVE NOT CONDUCTED A FELONY-CONVICTION SEARCH OR FBI SEARCH ON THIS INDIVIDUAL.""

Does this mean they are automatically breaking the law if a text-only e-mail client (no HTML) reads the e-mail?

If this guy becomes a problem, we can always invite him on a nice trip to Costa Rica and then feed him to the crocodiles

He seems to be more worried about his mainstream competition though, not having mentioned any adult sites. IF, and it's a big IF, he actually took on sites the likes of Match.com and won, he's still years away from the adult industry

What are you doing to stop it? You need to educate the politicians who are falling for this bullshit.

I'm glad you asked.

For one thing, FriendFinder has joined the Online Dating Industry's newly-created advocacy organization (Idea Oasis).

This non-profit organization will attempt to offer a unified front towards the legislative pressures we'll continue to face as our industry matures further.

I can happily tell you that, at the conlcusion of the i-Date Conference last month in Miami, the committee voted to vehemently oppose this [harmful, we decided] campaign, and to pool our resources and marketing talents for this important fight.

I can tell you, sitting around a table with all those mainstream-dating guys can feel a little weird at times -- I always think they're thinking "Uuugh, what's the pornographer going to say now!". But this last meeting in Miami, I felt like they were really glad AdultFriendFinder was there and had their backs.

What can I say, you work in Adult, you learn to fight.
