He wasnt fired.

They wanted him to stay.

Van Gundy wanted to resign last season before the season started, and management convinced him to stay.

It was a big deal then. Then this year they are an even worse team, management fucked up with talent, it was overdue for Van Gundy to walk away.

The Knicks stopped being the Knicks once they let Charles Oakley go. They are softer than some of the recent Ranger teams the Garden Mngt has spent so much on. That is the same braintrust that brought in Don Nelson, and then stabbed him in the back when he saw how lame the team was, and wanted to make changes. And the same Nelson who is kicking ass with the Mavs.
