Kazaa's Final Days????

For those concerned about all the free porn on Kazaa, this article may be of interest ...

http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-8022666.html

Not only are the U.S. movie and recording industries suing them for copyright infringement ...

But the Dutch copyright holders apparently nailed them for $45,000 A DAY in damages ...

I tried Kazaa, and then ran Ad-Ware and found
SpyWare on my computer, so for me it was bye bye kazaa.
But your right there is all kinds of porn on Kazaa, not just Kazaa, LimeWire and Morpheus also, and music coming out your ass.

It's odd though because with Morpheus being one of the biggest file sharing programs on the net now, you'd think that they'd start going after them. I'd better not give them any ideas, ha ha ha.

This is good news. I'd love to see them go down (due to their relation with scumware like Ezula etc.).

Actually Morpheus (aka Music City) is also being sued by the U.S. movie and recording industries ... which filed against both Morpheus and Kazaa (among others) ...

http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-7389552.html

Morpheus uses the same software that Kazaa does ... although the above mentioned article doesn't say whether Morpheus will be affected by the Dutch decision ...

I have to agree that getting rid of scumware would also be a benefit, if those guys go down ...

At $45,000 a day ... seems like there's a good chance ...

What about Audiogalaxy.com? They're into mp3 file sharing, I'm not sure if they keep stuff on their servers though.

I haven't heard nothing lately about Audio Galaxy. I imagine they'll be around for a while since they've been blocking downloads for musicians that complain.

I'm not sure what you mean about progress Fly ...

If you mean peer-to-peer technology then I suppose so ...

But all of these networks are built either upon copyright infringment, scumware, or both --- basically ripping off people's content or site traffic ...

I don't see much progress in that ...

Just a matter of time before they figure out the entire internet is the real culprit and just pull the damn plug.

I think this might be the progress Fly is talking about. From the above article:

"The FastTrack software is a second-generation peer-to-peer service, which some analysts have said will be much harder to control than Napster and its early rivals.

Napster, Scour and similar services allowed people to swap files by connecting into central servers that created a constantly updated index of files available for download on people's hard drives. To download a file, a direct link would be established between two computers. No files actually flowed through the companies' central servers, but without them no index could be created.

The FastTrack-based network, like the open-source Gnutella technology, instead allows searches to ripple through individual computers in the network without ever going through a central company server. Each company maintains Web pages, advertising streams and bulletin boards that show up through the software, but these bits of information are irrelevant to the process of searching and file swapping."

It's interesting because many people have claimed that the decentralized network was supposed to buy these people immunity from lawsuits ...

The argument claimed Napster went down because it had a centralized network, while Kazaa, etc. was decentralized --- supposedly making it impossible to sue them ...

Doesn't appear to be the case with $45 grand a day in damages ...

Hmm..

I thought that the closing of Napster was supposed to put an "end" of music sharing. But I haven't bought a cd in about a year now!

For every program that dies 10 new ones will emerge!

Maybe ... maybe not ...

One way or the other, these networks cost money to operate ... just like anything else ...

Napster hoped to make money by charging users ... Kazaa made at least a reported $1.4 million with scumware, according to this article:

http://www.salon.com/tech/inbox/arch...109/index.html

With $45,000 a day in damages and Napster pretty much sued out of existance, I don't see investors putting up a lot of money for this kind of thing ...

I'm sure file trading will continue on a smaller scale but the long-term viability of these bigger, more popular networks is, at best, questionable ...

I don't know personally because I've never downloaded those programs ...

But I've read there are ways to identify and remove the scumware ... but it's tricky and you have know what you are doing ...

Apparently they don't make it easy since Kazaa needs scumware installed on users' systems to make their money ...

If you read this attached link in the above mentioned article ...

http://www.geocities.com/p2ptech/giftalert.html

Apparently someone did try to develop a version of Kazaa that was free of scumware ...

But Kazaa may have killed it with a quote "security update" for users --- which essentially wouldn't allow the scumware-free system to work with Kazaa ...

Has anyone tried http://www.bearshare.com I don?t see too many people talking about it but they do have a wide range of data from porn to mp3 to whatever type of file you are looking for. The difference is this one looks like it?s harder to stop since it uses your computer as a server. Now, I don?t know too much about the details on who this works but I think I?m going to look in to it.
