Why is it soo many top posters make their own boards?

I never felt the need to get into someone else's business just cause it worked well for them. I do my own thing. I've always done my own thing. That's not to say i don't walk with my eyes open, but I try NOT to jump on bandwagons.

When I realized I'm wasting way too much time on GFY without any real financial return (ok i made over $30K in sig money but that's fuck all) I thought about it and rather than COMPETING with GFY - a board that has given me incredible good times, amazing contacts and unbelieveable exposure for my business for 4 years now - I decided I'd try and do something to add to it and created ambushinterview.com - First thing I did was call lensman and make sure he was ok with me running something revenue producing with his board, which he was ok with cause it ADDED to GFY instead of taking away from it by making a competing board.

I always wonder why soo many other people don't think like that? It makes me sad when i see people making their own adult webmaster boards with no real origionality behind them and all it's really about is going after Lensman's client base.

gfy is my number one board, but i try and support some other boards as well here and there because i like the small group of posters at them.

however, i dont ever see myself starting my own board, i love it here, plus i have to put in another 15k before i would consider myself a big poster, lol

In business, everyone goes after everyone elses client base. There is very little innovation in this industry.

95% of webmaster boards as well as affiliate programs are nothing but copy cats.

there's a rule to success - you either have to be first or best - those that are BOTH make STUPID amounts of cash for long periods of time

Competition is a good thing. It keeps everyone on their toes.

Boards come and boards go, they're just like nightclubs. What's hot and in today will be out and old tomorrow.

I did one just to have my own board. It gives me a chance to interact on a more personal level with the people who enjoy my posts. Mine is small and cozy feeling and I'm having a good time with it. 3 GFY'ers are MOD's already.

I'll be thrilled if by this time next year I hit 1,000 members. Not trying to be the biggest, just the board with the most quality posts.

They own programs many times. It is a smart business move.

I highly doubt that the board business is a high percentage of annual income for them.

If they can get the community going, which many have, more power to them.

I, as does Weg / G3X, supports other forums.

I think its cause those of us that have been on GFY for so long , long for how it used to be .. yes full of BS as always , but atleast there was a good business to bullshit post ratio .

Those days are gone and I think many are trying to establish a place for business away from GFY

Looking back I should have. It just struck me as ironically funny that that name was available. So I said what the fuck and decided to go with it.

Not sure, but PHPbb is free. Trying to steal client base is rough..but just setting up a forum is pretty easy, and good for the soul.

Actually, I'm not into trying to outdo GFY. GFY is an industry staple for fuck's sake. I just like to have a little board off to the side for just My own pure enjoyment, getting some quiet work and conversation done, and just basically enjoying My Goddess complex. Is that so wrong?

On the subject - I don't think any new adult webmaster board will be a real danger to GFY.

Well, unless Lensman bans you, Juicy, Wired Guy and KRL here, then they all will go to another board and the masses will go after them.

But I cant see it happening.

What can happen, some new boars will come and go, but I am quite sure GFY's ad revenue is increasing each year regardless of that.

Client base? ohh please man, sorry but I don't think the majority of us here has exclusive posting-contracts @ GFY...

that was a bit unrealistic phrase to say the least

LOL, is Lensman holding a patent on web boards ?

How is it biting the hand that is feeding you? So many webmasters post at multiple boards anyways. People who post at GFY will always post at GFY, even if they post at JBM, DMPM or any other webmaster board.

If i promote say, a big tit website, would it be wrong for me to one day open my own big tit paysite because i would be biting the hand that fed me while i was an affiliate? Of course not. This thread is almost AlienQesque. Easily comparable to the way he said Fletch backstabbed Lensman by starting DMPM. Nonsense.

This industry, because it is populated largely by amateurs, runs on the cult of personality. This board is more than a reflection of that: it is the reason for the board's success. Any "name" can show up here knowing that people will post on their threads, etc. And if they set out to appeal to the lowest common denominator, they will be even more popular.

But however popular they are here, they are playing in someone else's back yard. Given that ego is one of the things which drives people to success or develops as a result of success, it is not surprising they are not all happy with that reality.

Another reason I had to Sleazy was to have a place for our affiliates to post for business stuff. I don't think Lens would be thrilled with me using GFY to conduct my affiliate biz on here.

I think it might stem from a greed aspect, because some people see that there is money to be made by having a board. So they automaticly see dollar signs and run off and start their own copycat board. This is not ALWAYS the case though.

Some are program owners who use their boards as an additional support tool for their affiliates.

Some are created due to egos

Some are created cause they were banned from a board and they adapt the "I'll show those fuckers" mentality.

As for being orginal, We have a project launching very soon, not a board or a resorce site per say but then again yes. most importantly it will help EVERYONE who currently has a board and or resource site.

The following is true for 90% of the boards started the past 2 years.

Lots of posts => Celebrity webmaster with big ICQ list => Inflated ego => During a drunken conversation with a webmaster friend they agree to try and duplicate GFY ("but make it more fun/more biz orientated/more whatever!") => Discovers all his online friends weren't very close to him/her after all =>
Board dies
