What digital SLR should I get?

The time has finally come for me to get a digital SLR, but I'm buggered if I can make up my mind on which one to get. I've narrowed it down to 3 choices:

1. Canon Digital Rebel 300D. Very nice quality pics but build quality and features are slightly lacking.
2. Nikon D70. More features and better build quality but image quality isn't as good as the Digital Rebel.
3. Canon EOS 20D. Beats the crap out of the other two with a pointy stick and then fucks their wives in terms of quality and features, but I'd have to wait a few more months before I could afford one.

Or the fourth option - wait and see if Canon bring out a Digital Rebel replacement.

What should I do? I'm thinking I should go with option 3 and 4 combined, but what do you think? Any other alternatives I've missed? Do you own any of the above? If so, what do you think of them?

quickly skim'n through the threads here on GFY...came back to this one. Go with me on this one ....this is a guess...and haven't a clue data spcs on this one...but I think the 300D rebels chip and almost 2 generations newer than the 20d...(not meaning so much megapixels but firmware capabilities and newer microtechnology...(the shit that matters... LOL) ....my would be; check that spec out... digital slr's image quality, contrast range and color depth, is about chip technology and the glass that puts the light on the chip....am sure i have stirred it up enough that someone will get the 411, never said i was right just saying *Bro, check that shit out first*....

If you don't already have a camera, any day you don't is potential stuff missed. Buy the most in your budget now and sell it if you need to when getting the dream model.

The 20D...But if you can't manage that get the Rebel then you can always use the lenses on the next generation of Canon SLR's.

Depends what you want to do with it, if you want to just shoot personal kind of pics, rebel should be enough... if you want to shoot content, I would go with EOS 20D or something even better...

I'm looking for a new D-SLR as well, but am waiting a few weeks. There is a big camera trade show this months, and I read that many of the big SLR companies are releasing thier new models then. So, I am going to wait to see what comes out, as well as to see how the new gear will make the older models prices drop.

How does the 20D compare with the 10D?
I was meaning to follow up on the 20D, but never did.

the d70 all the way. it's one sweet camera that the canons don't come close to in terms of quality of picture (which being the end product is the most important)

If I remember correctly you are also from the brotherhood of the e-10 The 20d blows it away in speed and the autofocus is amazing but the kit lens(18-55) is ok . The e-10 with all its slowness does have a amazing piece of glass. I will upgrading the lens on the 20d . Looking at the tamerons reading very good things about them. Also the 20d has a pc sync like the e-10 which is nice and rare. I use strobes so it makes a difference to me.

To be completely honest with you: if you're shooting content the Fuji S2 Pro is incredible. The content looks better than the Nikons or the Canons (and it takes all Nikon Lenses). I haven't tried out the S3 yet, but I'm sure it continues the tradition.

I agree on both - the e-10 is extreeeeemly slow, and the glass captures some great shots. I would love to play with some of their new 4:3 system pro-SLRs (E-1, and new E-3), and see how they compare with canon and nikon.

I have a Nikon D1, a Nikon D1x, a Nikon D100, and a Fuji S2 Pro. Believe me: the Fuji takes better pics than any of them. The image quality is better.

I used to be a big fan of Nikon. But side by side the digital images out of Canon are superior looking.

The digital rebel is an excellent camera and the best selling SLR on the market.

The D20 has a stronger feature set, but will you really be using all the extras?

i own a d70 and its one of the best purchases i ever made. but remember that in the end, you can really make the difference if you know how to use light properly.....both options 1 and 2 are good in my opinion anyway. but i vouch the niky hands down. hope it helps.

DO NOT GET A DIGITAL REBEL!!!

That said, I've always shot with Canon EOS. If you're shooting for print work, pick up a 10D on eBay. If you're shooting for the web, a D30 is more than sufficient. Canon's CMOS sensors coupled with the best of their optics is as good as it needs to get.

When it comes to SLR's I have always been a fan of Nikon.

With that said....

The Canon 20D blows the Nikon D70 out of the water. In fact......Canon Digital SLR's in general perform better than Nikon and dollar for dollar are more cost effective.

The Canon's focus faster, have better battery life, and cost a bit less especially when it comes to the accessories.

Another note.....I own the Canon 20D and I shoot the majority of my images in "portrait" rather than "landscape." This means that more often then not, I have the camera turned sideways. Although this may seem trivial to a lot of people...It's important to me that I was able to add the optional battey grip to the Canon. Not only can I shoot for a lot longer but the batter grip includes another shutter release button for use when the camera is turned sideways.

The D70 does not offer this option.

I like the Canon Digital Rebel. It's inexpensive and light and easy to handle and takes all the Canon lenses. :-)
