putting ice packs on the back of your neck does help, it constricts the blood vessels. may not make it go away but it can take the edge off.

Gosh, I've tried everything from Imitrex, morphine and injections of different 'new' meds...so far nothing has worked. Advair and other the counter drugs don't do anything for me at all.

Sorry your having a bad day I hope you feel better real soon

I hate them.

No matter what i take, it doesn't seem to help much.

I just try and get some sleep, and hope that it goes away soon...

I've had them since I was 13 and have tried every single thing imaginable including beta blockers, calcium blocker, anti-seizure medication, biofeedback and even anti-depressants.

The ONLY thing that works for me is Imitrex. The other triptans are also very good, they just don't work for me. Find a good doctor who is willing to work with you.

Good luck - they suck!!

I used Imitrex until I started having heart pulpatations on them and had to stop using them.

I just started using the Maxalt RPD Rizatriptan and they are incredible. Stops it dead in its tracks. One of the great things about it is they are pills you put under your tongue and they disolve immediately. Works good for me because when I get a migraine I can't drink/swallow anything because I tend to vomit a great deal.

Feverfew literally saved my life when it comes to migraines. From the time I was 10 I used to get them, and as soon as that flash in my vision came, game over--out cold in a dark room for a day or two.

Then I got turned on to feverfew. It's an herb and it blocks platelet aggregation, which is necessary for triggering a migraine. Now when I get the early signs, I take two capsules and it literally short circuits the migraine.

Give it a shot.

Any old health store slav, though I suggest you get a tincture (liquid) so it's immediately absorbed.

yes this worked for me
i took some migraine class at a local hospital where they described it. i dont really know where all the preasure points are, but i do find sore spots on my head when i do get migraines and just massge them and put preasure on them and it really helped me.

I combined that with few months of acupuncture as well.

Nothing worked for me, it suffered for more than a year or never ending headaches.

I was getting to a point where i was thinking of trying either steroids or botox to releave my migraines.

Also remember to drink a lots of water, dehydration is the main cause of headaches.

for those who have tried everything with no success, find a neurologist who specializes in headaches, and if they can't help, keep looking until you find the "right" one. my gf had them bad for years, and then they became one continuous headache that she had for three months - it was so bad that we were in the ER 4-5 times within a month, and she ended up on a fentanyl patch supplemented by vicodin every 4 hours, just in order to survive.
a local neurologist/headache specialist (who couldn't even see her for six weeks after this started) told her that it was "rebound" headache from the painkillers (which she hadn't started taking until AFTER she got the non-stop headache) and said she had to go without anything for several months before even being able to diagnose correctly.
after a couple of weeks of being ready to kill herself, we found a "super headache specialist" about 2 hours away in the LA area - the first good sign that was when we called, the receptionist said "well, there's no way we can let her live like that - can she come in tomorrow?"
it cost $500 just to walk in the door, and $125 to $250 for appointments after that - but the doc spent 1 1/2 hours with her, and at the end of the session, diagnosed her as probably having a rare headache disorder complicated by hormonal issues. she took what he prescribed for a few weeks, supplemented it with some vitamin/minerals, and things improved almost 90% -- now, a few months after that with some tinkering, etc - she's mostly headache-free.
moral: there ARE people out there who can help --- don't give up!

excedrin for migraines is garbage
yes it works to releave your headache but than it gives you an even bigger rebound migraine.

Stay away from anything that has cafeine. Coffee itself does seen to help with migraines at times and other times just gives me a headache. But painkillers with cafeine will just give u a rebound headache after few hours or the next day when you wake up.

Kitty, as others said find a Dr that will work with you and also try all the holistic shit you can find accupuctire, accupreasure and the stuff DomBuyer recommended.

Having studied natural medicine for some time, some additional things to think about that mainstream medicine generally doesn't focus on, which is how you get them in the first place:

Migraines are often indicative of liver congestion/difficulties, and closely tied to allergies and food sensitivities. A good, proper fast and getting tested for food sensitivities can clear up migraines for good.

In my case, when I was around 20, I did just that and didn't have any migraines for more than 10 years after having them consistently since I was 10.

Mainstream medicine always talks about triggers, but those aren't the underlying CAUSES.

This is a good intro to some of those:

One other tip: Caffeine just after you get the triggers can help avoid a migraine and here's why: Caffeine is a vasodilator, which means it presses down on the blood vessels and when a migraine is triggered, the blood vessels are actually widened, which is what causes the incredible flashes and then boom, unreal pain.

So if you pop a little dose of caffeine, it can prevent the rapid opening of the blood vessels which cause the agony.

For some, caffeine does nothing or makes it worse, but in some cases, it can save your ass.

For me, the feverfew does it, so I'm lucky.

dombuyer is def right about the caffeine - although be careful, for many people it's also a trigger (if you can't get rid of nagging headaches, try going without soda for a few weeks and see what that does ;-)

I have suffered from migraines for over 20 years.
The only thing that I have found that works for me
is a combo of 2 - 600mg Ibuprofen tablets and 1 - 2.5mg Zolmitriptan ( Zomig Rapidmelts)
Never fails to get rid of the migraine.
