So The US Libarating Iraq Is Still A Bad Thing??

"The vote today was great. It will raise high the name of the Arab nation and Iraq. We haven't lived such a democracy for 50 years," said the 54-year-old former truck driver, who said he became crippled because surgery he needed could not be done in Iraq.

Prominent Iraqi Sunni politician Adnan Pachachi, who in recent months had called for the vote to be postponed because of violence, told CNN he was "relieved" and "encouraged" by a turnout he said was better than expected, even in Fallujah and Mosul.

Shiite Muslims, estimated at 60 percent of Iraq's 26 million people, were expected to vote in large numbers, encouraged by clerics who hope their community will gain power after generations of oppression by the Sunni minority.

"This proves that we are now free," said Akar Azad, 19, who came to the polls with his wife and sister. In addition to the assembly and provincial votes, Kurds are also choosing a regional parliament for their zone of northern Iraq.

Not a bad thing, nor a good thing...

Iraq is somthing that never had to happen.

Though its nice to see them folks get everything rebuilt and cashing in, American schools continue to crumble, buildings continue to age, streets continue to goto shit and our own borders are no stronger than they were on Sept 11th.

To a typical American I am sure is both happy for Iraq but unhappy about the cost's of this war. Over 250 Billion will go into this war with fierce oil prices to boot.

250 Billion that could have went to rebuilding America itself.

Yes it is a bad thing for us....we've spent and will continue to spend an enormous amount of US lives and treasure.
Our purpose for going there initially wasn't to "liberate" anyone....it was because we were told by our leaders that there were weapons of mass destruction and that Saddam was a clear and present danger to the US.

None of that was true.

If you're part of the camp that believes there's a moral imperative to "liberate" all peoples who live under the rule of a dictator/tyrant, then why aren't you clamoring for the US to invade Saudi Arabia????

Yeah, yeah, that's the plan. Let's invade the Saudis and use their oil to finance our campaign through Africa.....there are TONS of dictators there that opress their people that we need to overthrow.

Once we're done with Africa we can come back to the middle east and pick off the few non democratic regimes still standing there. (Like Kuwait)

well i am an independent thinker.

and voted for kerry.

and i am watching iraqi responses today.

and i will say everyone should keep an open mind on this. IF in 5 years the iraqi people are better off, the middle east is a safer place, and world energy costs are lower, then we can't really argue too much about this.

whether you like it or not, giving people some voice in what happens in their lives (democracy) is a noble thing.

it's just as noble as the idea that adults should be able to view porn in the privacy of their own homes.

Don't hold your breath for a stable middle east OR Iraq anytime in the near future. They had to EMPTY the streets of baghdad literally (no cars) to stop suicide bombers..yet people were still killed.

Ok..they had an election. That is good.
BUT NOW WHAT? Now certain people hold positions with names on them. But the U.S. is STILL The power broker and the force that keeps things together in Iraq.

Are we really supposed to believe that since there was an election that suddenly the Iraqi's are going to have the will or the courage to take over protecting their own people?
NOT for a long long time! Get used to the continued presence of American troops, the continued dying of American troops along with Iraqis, and the continued spending of BILLIONS of dollars on Iraq..because hey, isn't the bottom line really this:

WHAT HAPPENS IN IRAQ IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHAT HAPPENS IN THE UNITED STATES?

That's what our funding percentages seem to say!

I am happy that the elections went down in Iraq, I honestly thought they wouldn't.

But I am going to hold back on calling this a success until we see what happens after the inevitable assassination of the Iraqi president. If they can pull their shit together then, I will call it a success.

I also want to see if Iraq ends up like Afghanistan, where the president/gov't has control over 1 city out of the entire country.

But nothing will change the fact that this war was pointless and just a drain on an already empty US treasury.

well true, it is a drain now. but there is a natural resource there, and if and when (mostly american) companies can get the oil flowing the world (and iraqi citizens) will benefit from an increased standard of living. this might take 10-15 years, true.

about 60 years ago a little country about the size of california decided it was going to take on the world.

and some young kids (mostly farm boys like my father) left home and stopped them from doing that.

and after the dust settled it was mostly US business that helped the japs get back on their feet.

and today americans drive the lexus, and little japanese girls dye their hair blonde and want to look caucasian.

everyone likes to talk about USA imperialism and the "ugly american".

but when the shit happens in the world it is MOSTLY the usa taxpayer that puts things back together.

recently we had the world's biggest natural disaster in modern history...and the largest % of help does not come from the whiners and cry babies...check the airplanes flying aid into the people who need it.

and these people living in bamboo shacks can't do jack shit for americans, but
the boxes still say "gift from the people of the United States of America".

and that is the simple fucking truth, and that has always been the simple fucking truth.

You're full of shit.

Australia is giving more to the Tsunami victims than the USA despite having 1/15th of your population.

Stop acting like you are the only country that helps anybody out.

your point is well taken.

but much (most) of aussie aid is in the form of loans to indonesia---$ money that has strings attached.

i stand by my original premise---historically, worldwide, it is the usa taxpayer that absorbs most of the shit in this world.

Fuck! Cuba sent aid before the US acted. thats not to say US presence has not been a effective, but they dragged their asses - shouldn't lie about it. Canada fucked off too.

#2 - LIBERATION - Who got Liberated? On the day Bush was Innaugurated, Marines opened fire on a family in a vehicle killing both parents. Granted, they did not make a complete stop at the checkpoint, but it is THEIR country, being killed for not following the invading forces rules doesn't sound liberated to me. Oh, and the image of the child covered in blood crying over the bodies of her parents.......that'll stick.

NOBODY HAS BEEN LIBERATED. PERIOD. the only thing that has been liberated are natural resources, the same way you liberate a pen from a Jehova's Witness before kicking them out.

The numbers are pledges, not actual contributions; sadly, in previous disaster relief efforts, many pledges were left unfulfilled. If the shoe fits wear it. Big difference in pledging and actual contribution.

So what's your point? Your 'contribution' was a pledge too. Or is the USA the only one that keeps its promises when it comes to humanitarian aid?
