How to justify paying $6,000 for a domain that is worth $8 to most of you right now

I am in the process of purchasing a domain name for $6000 (I can't mention the name for obvious reasons). The domain is a single word new technology name that is at the very early stages of it's life span, 99% of you have never heard the term, but the technology is almost guaranteed to take off within 3 years, which is how long it would take before the term becomes a household name.

So basically, to 99% of you, this domain would be worth $8 right now. To give you an idea of the caliber of the name, it would be equivelant to owning HDTV.com for example. The guy wants $6000 for it and he is very firm on that price, saying he has had 2 offers on it and won't let it go for any cheaper.

I believe the domain could be worth $50,000-$100,000 in 3 years, once the technology is widely available. Of course, the key word here is "could". There is a 20% chance it will never take off. How would you assess the risk/reward ratio on such a purchase? Is it a no brainer buy?

If it is nano.com yes, go for it. Nano-technology will be huge.

I can't think of what else it might be.

No, it is not nano.com...I would imagine nano.com might be selling for a bit higher than $6,000.

if you have $6000 that you are willing to gamble with then go with it... but your odds on playing the technology game are just as good as any vegas table game... you could make out nicely or you can be out $6k... that's my opinion...

i've heard the "it's guaranteed to be the next big thing" way too many times to ever believe it... even if 75% of the technological community believe in it i wouldn't buy into it until it's well impemented... anyone remember Netobjects Fusion, or Apple's Webobjects... they may not be the same technology genre as you are mentioning but it's just to make a point...

I can afford it, I am just trying to justify spending $6k on a domain that would make even most domain aficionados scratch their head, because of how unknown it is. When I say it is in it's infancy, I really mean it.

To give you an idea, I did a search on google for it right now, I get 6770 results back for it. The domain was registered in 2002. That is when the concept was created.

My advice. Ask friends if they would consider buying X product using X technology. If he/she says yes they could see themselves using expendable income to purchase the product... then you should buy the domain.

i doubt that theres only a 20% chance of it never taking off. if there was though it would be a no brainer. do the math. you would have an 80% chance of making 10x-20x your money back. if you would pass that up it would be stupid.

I'll back you, should you provide information. Of which, I am confident in your reasoning/the future of this technology. I mean, you can't go wrong. Should I not be interested? Lips are sealed, and you can feel free to make the acquisition by yourself.

Sounds like a no-lose situation for you now.

I think it's a mistake and I'll tell you why.

You buy an established name for $6k that you yourself hunt down (not something offered on the boards) and you're guaranteed a return of between 100-300% in just a few months. The risk is minimal.

However, as someone who has been in domains for a long time, the shell game of betting on ephemeral names--especially technological ones--almost never pays off big.

I got $1 million liquid to spend on names every day and I'd never bite based on the propostion you're throwing out there.

Two cents right there.

Buy it, you already did the math.

The name costs $6k and you're 80% confident it will be worth $50k-$100k, then it's worth the risk...

If you know of future development and money that companies are putting towards developing the technology / marketing the technology (and hopefully the name of the technology won't change...) then I'd go for it. Good luck.

not confidence, but a chance, or probability that something will occur ..and he already 'measured' that

you say there are 6,000+ results in google? then, google for your TERM + other keywords

//

TERM +"venture capital"
TERM +vc
TERM +news
TERM +industry
TERM +business
TERM +startup
TERM +"start up"

also, see if there are synonyms for your term:
~TERM

then goto: http://news.google.com and enter your TERM

///

if the tech is only 3 years away, you should get some results for the searches above. do this every week/month until you decide to buy the domain. keep in mind, you are taking a risk, so try to make it as calculated as possible. What if this is the next big (tech) term like these were/are:

HDTV
SEARCH ENGINE
ONLINE
EMAIL
BLOG
VOIP
NANO
WIRELESS
RFID
CORD BLOOD

etc...

but, what if it's the next BETAMAX? what if the term's already trademarked? what if it's only a pipe dream? what if the technology is too far away for you to benefit from any traffic/buyout? what if the technology is always on the horizon (VR) or has interchangeable terms (DVR, PVR) or if you buy it and wait to long to sell/develop it (i.e. VCR) - many factors to consider.

I've made a few domains purchases like the one you're planning on making, where I bought a domain to cash in on the future, but my criteria was different.

if the TECH is distant horizon, I register or buy the domains for under $100
if the TECH is years away, I buy the domains for under $1K
if the TECH is tomorrow, then I try to keep it under $5K (i.e. bought SexPatch.com 3 months ago)
if the TECH is today, then I try to get a good deal. (i.e. bought Genomic.com last year 1 2 3)
I'm already in talks with several companies who are considering acquiring Genomic.com for cash + stock.

Obviously, some domains have their own criteria. For example, I reg'd many BLOG domains years ago (SexBlog.com, PornBlog.com, NewsBlog.com etc). I now have hundreds of BLOG domains and I still buy them for $XX-$XXXX but only because I'm launching a cohesive network. If you're planning on buying it to resell later then make sure you have a backup plan just in case it doesn't go your way. Good luck. Keep us informed and email me if you have more questions (sponsorcash {AT} mail.com) I won't compete with you... I have too much on my plate already.

if you haven't already, check out www.dnjournal.com and look at their sales chart archives to see what your $6,000 could have bought and see if you'd be happier with those domains or the one you're considering.

but more importantly, ask yourself this question:

When is StudioCash launching?
