Shampoo is designed to remove the build up of these oils better than shower gel. A dandruff shampoo works really well because it keeps the shine on your head down while conditioning the skin to reduce flakes.
There are also shower gels designed to work as a shampoo and body cleanser you could try.

most soaps will tend to dry your scalp out too

Hon, the only difference is a matter of seconds. Is your schedule that tight that you have to make a choice between shampoo and bodywash? Set your alarm one minute earlier per day and indulge in taking a shower 60 seconds longer.
