Why can?t I use your services for my US traffic?
Certain operators are refusing to carry adult traffic. This situation is set to change and, rest assured, we will be amongst one of the first-to-market when it does.
Does this mean that no US traffic is allowed? Or am I just reading it wrong???

No one in the USA can use the services, so why would you want to push US traffic to it?

Tell me about the SMS billing thing, I don't want to do mobile porn, but I'm looking into selling cellphone Java games online, and the only thing that's stopping me right now is that I don't really have a good billing solution?????

Yeah, we can deliver to the US as well, and integrate with your credit card system so you collect the cash instead of bouncing off to some third party site.

Hit me up if you want more info.

It seems everyone here is starting to jump on the bandwagon.
My company currently has an iron-clad solution for adult webmasters to get in on the mobile phone market.

The key to the mobile market, as far as adult is concerned, is webmaster eduation.
Not only is adult-on-cell an entirely different medium, it is also totally distinct from the internet in how it functions.

Here's a snap course summary of how it works.
-> To send pictures to a person's mobile phone, it has to be routed through a short-code. Short codes are specific to countries, and the network providers in the country.
Short codes have to be leased, or in cases such as the US, bought exclusively.
This means that to get 'global coverage', there's an incredible outlay of cash involved.

-> There are also restrictions by country restricting what can be sent. Ireland, for example, bans the sending of adult content. If you have a sponsor who claims they can send adult there, beware.

-> It doesn't stop there. Each country, and each telco have different legislation. For example, the UK has laws that can be likened to the CAN-SPAM law, that dictate what can be sent, and how. Navigating through these situations is a mine-field, so it's vital that you make sure whoever you send your traffic to has their backend water-tight- because if something isn't done properly, they stand to lose their short codes overnight.

-> The United States is an entirely different kettle of fish.
For a start, the market is different - whereas European users are quite comfortable to pay anywhere up to 5 Pounds for mobile content, US users will balk at anything over $3, generally.
-> The sending of adult content, payed via Reverse SMS is prohibited.
-> To send ANY form of bulk SMS, programs must own their own dedicated short code system. This is new legislation that came in February 2005, and not everyone has caught up with it. Again, ensure your sponsor has these points covered.

Finally, payment. If you've skimmed every other section, it's vital that you read this.
The telcos involved in the mobile process take, on average, 45-50% of a sale.
If you're talking a $5 sale, that leaves $2.50 for the sponsor, and affiliate.
If the affiliate program is paying 50%, then that leaves 10-30c as profit.

The telco cuts are HARD, DEFINED %'s. The only real variable for sponsors is getting bulk discounts, but as a general rule of thumb - add up how much sponsors are paying - if they're 'paying' 60% of the Gross sale, they're making a loss.
Whereever they are making up that loss is left as an exercise of deduction to the reader.

-> Make sure you pay KEEN attention to what your sponsor offers - whether it is 50% GROSS, or 50% NET - because there is a huge difference.

All of that said-
Our solution, which has been in development for over 18 months, is solid. We've done our homework, and we understand how the industry is based.

Our background is adult, our backing is adult. We are backed and run by Netpond, the leader in everything adult; we understand the industry.

We pay 50% GROSS. We allow webmasters to web-enable ANY of their content. We allow surfers to add text, draw on, and manipulate the images to suit their tastes.
We have worldwide billing and delivery. There are no setup costs involved, and no maintenance costs. You simply add the links, and make profit.

More importantly, we're offering *proper* deliver to the US, right from day one, done properly. There has been a worrying trend toward mainstream mobile companies to try to jump on the adult bandwagon without setting themselves up properly, which is detrimental to affiliates and surfers.

We are in beta, and are releasing publically, very soon - in a matter of days.
If you have any concerns, questions or queries, please feel free to email me - [email protected] - or ICQ 52779009.

I'm here anytime to offer assistance, help, to bring you up to speed on any aspect of the industry, or to help integrate your website.

I hope this post helps explain a bit of the background of the market.
Simon

It's not quite as scary as all that, but sure it's complicated. Thats why 3rd party companies exist, so each website doesn't have to deal with that stuff

-> Make sure you pay KEEN attention to what your sponsor offers - whether it is 50% GROSS, or 50% NET - because there is a huge difference.

This is an extremely good point.. (and since I pointed it out; we obviously offer the better payout, although it isn't always exactly 50% of gross, it depends on the phone company)

> Short codes have to be leased, or in cases such as the US, bought exclusively.

This is true, but misleading. You 100% DO NOT have to go out and purchase your own shortcode (or lease one) to start selling mobile content today. Wirerunner.com (our company) can have you up and running on the shortcodes we use in no time, and you don't have to go buy anything.

Agreed, all these things are complicated, but that's why we are in business no? Lets not spread too much FUD at such an early stage.

- Colpanic's right. It's not necessary to route any multimedia asset through a short code. That's incorrect.

- You need more than your back end 'watertight' to deal with global carrier guidelines...ask your provider to show you the carrier guidelines for each country & carrier they are connected to so you know what you are signing up for.

- Ask what their CP policy is and how they prevent CP from slipping into the system after sponsor/webmaster has signed up.

- Ask if they moderate all of the content that is distributed by their system....most will say they can't because they want ISP 'mere conduit status' .....but if CP gets through then everyone in the chain has far more to worry about than losing a $600 a month short code (which can be sourced anywhere again) over night.

- The USA...yes that's right you can't charge by SMS for adult, and you can't even send adult by SMS because US carriers demand that you do so in assocation with a short code (they want complete control) and if they see an 'adult application for shortcode' they will kill it dead. But that doesn't stop US consumers from pulling WAP content and been charged for it through any means you can think of. It's off the network carriers 'deck' (portal) so unless they are employing skin tone filtering software (hit&miss) how will they prevent WAP browsing charged traditionally? Yes, WAP URLS are a pain to type in but there are solutions - for our customers.

- Payouts.. everyone wants the green. And many vendors will offer more green than others. Check what you may be losing however for your higher payouts ...does it include worldwide customer support 24/7, does it include free video encoding to 3GPP, does it include affiliate (NATS/ES) integration, does it include mobile traffic generation programs to boost your mobile sales from your site? Examine the hidden costs of higher payouts..someone has to pay for video encoding..will it be you or the vendor?

- And what about added value? Is your vendor a one trick pony or able to develop and execute a full mobile strategy integrating web, WAP, SMS across your revenue generating and member loyalty/retention business units? Selling content directly from the web will make you money..but you know that there are many other opportunities that mobile presents through custom video, live streaming, location tracking, mobile image recognition, chat and good old fashioned SMS that you simply can't ignore. You want the whole cake not just a slice.

So these are important questions to ask..but in the end you do business with people you like and, since our launch at Vegas Internext in January, over 50 sponors have liked working with BabeCell. I'd be happy to share our experience with anyone on GFY about adult mobile and I'd be even happier to share our experience in mainstream mobile, developed over that last six years with Fortune 500 content owners who have exactly the same mobile business problems as you do..they want incremental renvenue from their intellectual property..theirs just isnt as 'pink' as yours!

And if you like us, well we might just end up doing business. In the meantime - Keep on 'Cashing in on Cellular' GFY!

-RE Short codes-
My apologies - I was talking from the point of view from the sponsor, not the client.

Naturally, as the client, all you need to do is send traffic. Neat, huh?
