Houses: How big is too big?

how many sq footage per person do you think crosses the line into excess and waste?

i will go out on a limb and say 2000 sq feet per person is the limit

Mines 3,500 and I really don't like that much room. Only me and my gf living here also so we have 2 empty rooms(not counting my dogs bed in his room), and an empty basment.

i dont know what square footage i would say but i would say that if you live in a house that you barely see most of its too big, i mean having large areas for the areas you are in alot is nice but to have large areas you never see is a waste but everyone seems to want that

It depends upon how much furniture you are willing to buy...if a house is well equipped then any amount looks fine. I personally would like a 3000-4000 Sq. ft. home.

2,000 Sq Feet is fine for me.... My fiance and I are buying a 1400 sq foot townhouse because it's all we need. She's working 5 days a week and I'm away on biz 40% of the time.

I think everyone things differently on this one.
I like smaller homes becuase they feel homier. But I also like bigger homes because when you need the space, its there.

Dont go for a castle sized house. It will only make you scared and lonely!

You dont want a big haunted house!

I have 2000 sq ft here in my house and its more than enough for Me and the Mrs to live in full time.

I rented a 10k sq ft vacation home last summer, was very nice but owning a house that size has to be insane for heating and cooling cost, plus maintence......

Two of us are in 5200 and it doesn't seem to large.Other than a few guest bedrooms the whole place gets used regularly.

As long as the upkeep doesn't stretch your means, the bigger the house the better the investment as real estate rarely goes down in value. Hey, if it's so big you never see the other rooms you could take in boarders... at least they'd keep you from feeling haunted

We purchased our house about 6 months ago, it is 4k sq ft. The wife and I plus 2 kids and at the moment it is about perfect, when the kids move out it there will be alot of wasted space. We have been playing around with ideas to remodel and create large areas out of multiple small rooms.
We would have bought a bit smaller but couldn't pass up the deal.
Owner carried, no down, 3.5% for 30yrs fixed

I lived in big houses growning up and before I moved here had a big house for two people. The ONLY reason I was there was because of the school district - there wasn't' anything any smaller.

Now I've downsized and I LOVE it Smartest thing I've ever done. Big houses (4-12K Sq ft) are just a waste for 1-2 people, IMHO.

we bought a 2400sf townhome in november.
we live on the main floor. there is the kitchen, dining room, living room, bathroom, and bedroom down here. upstairs is an additional 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a small storage room. the only reason we go upstairs is to shoot.
