You know what amazes me about the video side of the industry

is that things like this have to be spoken about

Quote:
Aly from AVN is at her second AVN Expo. She's trying to explain to the video-DVD guys about the Internet. Why let your content sit around in dusty warehouses when you could be streaming it over the Net and selling it VOD (Video On Demand).
i mean come on, are these people not business saavy or what? isn't it common sense to make the most out of your content?

how fucking wierd

Over all, many of the video/production/distribution people look down their noses on the Internet side of things.

I doubt it very much.

But the truth is the Internet is growing and magazines and videos are shrinking, purely on the fact that new buyers look on the Internet before Yellow Pages or the mall and the old ones are literally dying off.

Look at us and our situation. Three years ago our Internet sales were with a few brokers, Photorama, Best Adult Content and Scarlett. They were nice but in no way competed with a market where a single set would make $4,000

But I wanted more so went to the Vegas show to see if I could find more brokers. My reaction was so poor I came home and started www.paulmarkham.com.

Initial reaction was that there were a lot of people providing content who did not have a clue and would never be able to compete in my market, the business is fragmented and very new. Plus sales did not exactly take off.

Today we're probably one of the biggest content providers on the Net and make a lot more money than we did 3 years ago.

However when you approach the video producers to do a deal distributing their product they are scared that anything that goes on the Net will be stolen, duplicated and sold to the people who are buying from the shops.

They will slowly learn, look at the companies who have made the crossover from print and tape to the Net. Private, Score, Hustler, Vivid, Wicked, Seventeen are ones that immediately spring to mind. Some you may not know are PRO, Gold Star and Thamesmead. These is also Max Hardcore and Ed Powers with sites.

Now imagine selling videos on the Net up against the enormous back library of Evil Angel, Anabolic, etc. Don't assume because they are not here today they will not come tomorrow.

The one thing I'm learning from opening a paysite is traffic is not KING, converting is. Generating hits is not a problem, even quality hits. It's what happens when those hits arrive on a site. when the vInternet gets fully up to speed be prepared for more porn giants to want a slice of this cake.

i've been talking to people on the video side of the industry for years. most of them have been burnt badly by brokers and webmasters who've raped their asses. They are extremely leary, and rightfully so, of doing business with anybody from the Net side of the biz. when they want to know who they will make money with they come to me and I tell them who's got the resources and who is relatively honest.

if anybody in the chain is getting screwed, that's how you decide who is honest. a program that rips off a surfer will no doubt rip off a content partner, a program that shaves affiliates will no doubt rip off a content partner.

the advice i give any of them is if they have the money then do it themselves - hire some people who know what they're doing and run your own show - Redlight District did this. They are doing great. The two reprobates behind Meatholes did the same and it looks like they are doing great. If a video company doesn't want to go that route then find a web company that has a track record of success and a good reputation - as Flynt did when they turned over their paysites to Webquest. VideoTeam has partnered with Pimproll.

The video companies are old school. Anabolic and Evil Angel/Buttman have had their own paysites for years. Evil Angel is the one video company that has a huge upside on the Net yet unrealized, the strongest hardcore gonzo content in the world but Evil Angel like Redlight is a hybrid, distributor and producer, the best Evil Angel directors like Jules Jordan own their own movies. So they really aren't free to do whatever they want with everything that has the Evil Angel logo on it.

good point Mutt, some of them talked to fools who took the short buck or did not have the brains to go for the long one.

I remember meeting a broker who had 15 of my sets, over 3 months he had sold $150 worth and was telling me he did not have enough.

I worked out that if he did the same with everyone else as he did with me he would not be able to afford a room in Motel 6 in Vegas. We met in hus suite in the MGM.

He's now practically out of the business, no one will deal with him.

Its billions against millions. My bet is that Internet adult is about $500 million maximum.

it's more than that - a few billion by my estimate based on IBILL's public financial statements. more money off the Net, the only problem is that the people who make it ain't the producers, it's the mainstream media conglomerates who are raking in the most money from pornography.

It's not just the porn industry. The music and movie industries have not figured out how to make a buck or promote via the internet. Personally I hope they don't figured it out for a long time as it allows more opportunities for us and for us to grow to a point where we can compete with them when they do come.

mutt's completely on to something with his post. I spend a couple days a week in the Valley dealing with these guys, and frankly, they have been burnt repeatedly by the internet guys they've dealt with and they don't particularly appreciate it. Some of them burned by people with decent reputations too, but you never hear about it since the video guys don't post on internet message boards or even know what or where to find internet message boards.

I've hooked up a couple of them with people who will actually work with them to make money on both sides.

At the same time, the average internet guy is as ignorant about the video business as the video guys are about the internet.

The comments regarding Aly were about her being a panel member on a seminar about convergence, something that's just not happening on the video side much at all yet, though AEBN and Gamelink are doing about the best job of anyone I've seen.

But the thing is that the average internet guy doesn't have to know jack shit about the video biz to succeed. Just like Video people never had to really know jack shit about Magazines. When you're involved in the "new" medium, it's the responsibility of people within the "old" medium to evolve.
