One of the major things that piss me off about firefox is that it underlines every fucking link despite what the webpage wants.

How do I get rid of this - and see the page the way the page was meant to be seen?

Where you'd normally put in the URL, try putting in:

about:config

You'll want to change the value for accessibility.tabfocus, what value do you have listed there now?

As soon as 95% is using FF it will probably be as shitty as IE is. IE is a bigger target so more fun for scammers, exploits, install, etc, etc
