I have a persistant mental image of US foreign policy, which haunts me even in my sleep. The vanguard of a vast army is marching around the globe, looking for its enemy. It sees a mass of troops in the distance, retreating from it. It opens fire, unaware that it is shooting its own rear.

Is this too fanciful a picture? Both Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein were groomed and armed by the United States. Until the invasion of Iraq, there were no links between the Baathists and Al Qaeda: now Bush?s government has created the monster it claimed to be slaying. The US army developed high-grade weaponised anthrax in order, it said, to work out what would happen if someone else did the same. No one else was capable of producing it: the terrorist who posted envelopes of anthrax in 2001 took it from one of the army?s laboratories.(1) Now US researchers are preparing genetically modified strains of smallpox on the same pretext, and with the same likely consequences.(2) The Pentagon?s space-based weapons programme is being developed in response to a threat which doesn?t yet exist, but which it is likely to conjure up. The US government is engaged in a global war with itself. It is like a robin attacking its reflection in a window.

I'm bored with having to correct simple people but here are some main points: the US did not arm Osama. Al Qaeda and Saddam were co-operating on a "my enemy's enemy is my friend" basis for years.

Saddam was one of the biggest enemies of Osama as he locked up and killed Muslim fanatics.

Before I do what I do now I was an intelligence analyst for a number of years. I do know what I am talking about. I don't get Fox News in my country either.......

The USA supplied the Afghan Mujahidin with Stinger missiles with a limited shelf life (meaning that they could only be used for a limited period before they would "break" and could not be fired). These were not supplied to bin Laden but to another faction of the Muhajidin which was somehat more friendly. Almost all of the unused Stingers were bought back anyhow.

Saddam, (as well as being a major financier of international terrorism for decades), co-operated specifically with an al Qaeda group which installed itself within the Kurdish area of Iraq. This group (Ansar al Islam) were to take care of Saddam's "Kurdish problem" and were supplied with arms and backing on this basis.

Sorry to fact-check your asses like this on a public board but stupidisimos like you need to get your heads out of your asses.

I'll recommend The Threatening Storm by Kenneth Pollack.
The book might be a little too thick for some of you who just

He wasn't making the quote based on the totality of the book. The book is factual and lays out the history of Iraq and US from an insider perspective. His comments are referring to his Hawkish stance and he is a man and admits he was wrong. That is all the more reason why you should read both the books. Again, it is history and before everyone start flapping at the jaw they should try to learn some.

Then beginning in 1985, the CIA supplied mujahideen rebels with extensive satellite reconnaissance data of Soviet targets on the Afghan battlefield, plans for military operations based on the satellite intelligence, intercepts of Soviet communications, secret communications networks for the rebels, delayed timing devices for tons of C-4 plastic explosives for urban sabotage, and sophisticated guerrilla attacks, long-range sniper rifles, a targeting device for mortars that was linked to a U.S. Navy satellite, wire-guided anti-tank missiles, and other equipment.
Between 1986 and 1989, the mujahideen were also provided with more than 1,000 state-of-the-art, shoulder-fired Stinger antiaircraft missiles.
By 1987, the annual supply of arms had reached 65,000 tons, and a "ceaseless stream" of CIA and Pentagon officials were visiting Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) headquarters in Rawalpindi and helping to plan mujahideen operations.

Well, then you should not blame people of having seen too many Michael Moore movies if your own picture is based on a book that even the author said was based on faulty intelligence. I certainly do not take everything that Morre says as the ultimate truth but you people should at least try to see that starting a war in Iraq was just one of several options, and probably the worst.

There is acually a lot more in George Monbiot's article(s) that at least deserves to be reflected upon.

Fortunately, I actually read and study history and then base my views on what I have learned. Too many pick a view point and then look for information to support that view point. I would say Michael Moore lovers, maybe yourself included, are on the top of that list.

The bottom line is the US has chosen to reshape the middle-east. We won't know if what the US is doing will be successful for about 20 - 25 years. If successful, defined by however you would like to define it, then the US will come out looking good. If not successful then you and all of your cohorts will be vindicated.
