she shit for the first time in three days. She hadn't eaten in a couple days so I wasn't too worried about it, but she stood up a minute ago, looked me right in the eyes and let one of the loudest juiciest sounding bowel movements I have ever heard!

So I flopped her down and changed her diaper, by far the nastiest thing I have ever seen in my life. If anything ever came out of a kids ass and then sprung to life, this would have been it!

Anyway, I've been wiping her head witha cool rag and worrying myself sick for the last 24-28 hours or so, and I think she may have just purged the demons - I'm happy :D

If your daughter is running a fever that high, I'd suggest you take her to the doctor immediately, if you haven't already. High fevers are indications of very bad things, including meningitis and other viral issues. Not something to be playing around with, but I'm sure you know that. My son had a spinal tap done once when he was little and it was one of the scariest things I'd ever had to deal with back then.

That high of temperature is in the seizure range and nearing the serious danger range. Never mind cold cloths, see a doctor immediately.

My god son, who is 4 months old, was running a fever slightly less than that. He's now in the Children's hospital in Costa Rica and may have Meningitis. I wouldn't fuck around with a temperature like that.

I called her doctor earlier and the chldrens hospital a little later just to verify, they both said as long as she is taking in fluids and acting ok, things should be fine for now. thanks for the input though.

Sounds like an odd response from a doctor. Anyway, Children's asprin will bring down fever and you can give her a bath in cool water. Good luck!

Little kids normally run high temperatures when sick.. if it was an adult hitting 104.. then it's time to head to the hospital fast.. but a little kid.. normal.

I probably should have stressed the "WAS running a 104.3" part - I am feeling better about the whole thing because her temp is going down as we speak and I wanted to tell someone about the incredible diaper experience i just had.

Thanks for the honest concern.. however, if this post doesn't clear things up, I will be forced to pull the offending diaper out of the bombshell type packaging I encased it in, unwrap it, and take pictures to further clarify what this thread was realy about.

Honestly, listen - I drive an hour and a half to pick her up every THurssday morning and an hour and a half to drop her off every Monday morining, that's 6 hours a week plus all the single dad time inbetween that I devote to this little girl - I called the doctor, the hospital, and they both said to "calm down, let it run it's course". I know, it's Monday night and I still have her? That's because I weasel every single minute and day I can out of her mom ;). A hospital bill is the LAST thing I would worry about. Now lighten up and imagine the diaper.

You should not give children aspirin..in fact anyone under 19 should not take aspirin due to Reyes syndrome.

Scary-my kids all get super high fevers from even common things like teeth coming in and ear infections. My son's went as high as 105 with no repercussions. On the other hand, my step-son, with fevers at barely 100 will have hallucinations and seizures. Depends a lot on the child, so if her ped. (who presumably knows her history) says to relax, it's probably safe to relax.

yeah man, next time her fever gets that high you should really take her to the ER. I caught a fever like that when I was like 2 and wound up having to be put on IV's and given icebaths and shit to get my temp down. pussyluver mentioned that some are fine at that temp and some aren't and that's definitely the case, if the brain gets too hot it can cause braindamage and sometimes even death. I'd hate to see anything happen to yer kid, can't ever be "too safe" ya know?

After my cousin's daughter risked loosing a leg due to an infection in her femur, I take no chances. After 2 days, if the fever doesn't break, the throat isn't red & they aren't complaining about their ears - I take them to the hospital - that's me though.

I hope your daughter is feeling better & her fever subsides & that she's fighting off whatever the infection was.

That would be my advice too . . . I will never forget when I was very little I had a temperature of 102 and my mom put me in a bathtub filled with water and ice cubes.

The medical advice is sound - in the absence of other symptoms, the fever in itself wasn't high enough for an ER for infants/toddlers. Though going against the grain here, I'd suggest skipping aspirin, and alternating acetaminophin and ibuprofin, recommended dosage, every three hours. (Each is normally recommended every 6 hours, but they work independently of one another, so staggering them, each every 6 hours, helps keep the fever down continuously...when one is wearing off the other is active). This keeps the fever down and reduces pain, both of which make a kid happier. It doesn't address the cause of the fever, but if you're just trying to ride it out, might's well make the riding more comfortable. An ice bath sounds unpleasant to me...a tepid bath would do the same thing - if it's any temp below 104, it'll cool the body, and a gentler, more gradual cooling sounds more comfortable. Or just washing with a cool wet cloth. But different strokes for different folks.

This thread is a classic example of people not reading before they post.

My son had a febrile seizure (scroll up for a good explanation of what that is) when he was about 2. It isn't that common (about 5%)but just in case there is one person here who it will happen to I will relate my experience.

It was the scariest moment of my life as he started convulsing and then went unconscious. He was still unconscious by the time we got him to the ER.

As I ran barefoot up to the desk carrying him the nurse mentioned something about signing in. I pushed past her and kicked the doors of the ER open and another nurse directed me to the nearest available bed. He regained consciousness about 2 minutes later and was discharged in a couple hours.

I heard the nurse that found me the bed being busted for not correctly admitting him first and it took every ounce of self control not to rip the head off her supervisor.

If I had known what it was I wouldn't have panicked and he would probably have come around faster but anyway.

Before I give my advice - I did read the thread, and understand the point of it is the diaper. I don't really have a comment about a shitty diaper though, so I will give my input on the fever.

When my kids run a low fever, Tylenol works best. When it is really high, liquid ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) brings it down REALLY quickly.

Glad she purged her demons. ;)

Actually my son is 13 and he hasn't had baby aspirin since he was about a year old, his pediatrician didn't like it due to the chance of Reyes. Alternating the Tylenol and Advil is the advice I got then and it does work well.

NEVER give a little kid Acetaminophen. It's too easy to overdose them and you can destroy their liver. NEVER give a kid an adults version of Tylenol. I'd take your kid to the ER.

I caught a fever like that when I was like 2 and wound up having to be put on IV's and given icebaths and shit to get my temp down. pussyluver mentioned that some are fine at that temp and some aren't and that's definitely the case, if the brain gets too hot it can cause braindamage and sometimes even death. After 2 days, if the fever doesn't break, the throat isn't red & they aren't complaining about their ears - I take them to the hospital - that's me though. I hope your daughter is feeling better & her fever subsides & that she's fighting off whatever the infection was.

arg Confirmed User Join Date: Feb 2003 Posts: 1,164	The medical advice is sound - in the absence of other symptoms, the fever in itself wasn't high enough for an ER for infants/toddlers. Though going against the grain here, I'd suggest skipping aspirin, and alternating acetaminophin and ibuprofin, recommended dosage, every three hours. (Each is normally recommended every 6 hours, but they work independently of one another, so staggering them, each every 6 hours, helps keep the fever down continuously...when one is wearing off the other is active). This keeps the fever down and reduces pain, both of which make a kid happier. It doesn't address the cause of the fever, but if you're just trying to ride it out, might's well make the riding more comfortable. An ice bath sounds unpleasant to me...a tepid bath would do the same thing - if it's any temp below 104, it'll cool the body, and a gentler, more gradual cooling sounds more comfortable. Or just washing with a cool wet cloth. But different strokes for different folks.

My son had a febrile seizure (scroll up for a good explanation of what that is) when he was about 2. It isn't that common (about 5%)but just in case there is one person here who it will happen to I will relate my experience. It was the scariest moment of my life as he started convulsing and then went unconscious. He was still unconscious by the time we got him to the ER. As I ran barefoot up to the desk carrying him the nurse mentioned something about signing in. I pushed past her and kicked the doors of the ER open and another nurse directed me to the nearest available bed. He regained consciousness about 2 minutes later and was discharged in a couple hours. I heard the nurse that found me the bed being busted for not correctly admitting him first and it took every ounce of self control not to rip the head off her supervisor. If I had known what it was I wouldn't have panicked and he would probably have come around faster but anyway.

I don't really have a comment about a shitty diaper though, so I will give my input on the fever. When my kids run a low fever, Tylenol works best. When it is really high, liquid ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) brings it down REALLY quickly. Glad she purged her demons. ;)
