"could hit Earth in 2029, a NASA scientist said Thursday, but he added that the perceived risk probably will be eliminated once astronomers get more detail about its orbit."

Astronomers still stress that it is very likely the risk will be reduced to zero with further observations. And even as it stands with present knowledge, the chances are 97.8 percent the rock will miss Earth.

Asteroids are the biggest risk to the human civilisation for sure, but not many people want to realize this and this board isn't certainly a good place to discuss such things, since what most people here want is to get high and fuck a hooker.

BTW, I've heard that it is possible that there are also "invisible" asteroids that could hit Earth at any time.

well... seeing the earth is 70% water on the surface, if it did hit the ocean, I wonder if it would create bigger tsunami's than the ones in thailand currently.

KRL, do the math for us.

The rock is 1,300 feet in diameter, not sure the speed its travelling or an astroid's total mass.

I think we have more to be worried about like being in a car accident or falling in the shower. I don't think we have to be too worried about asteroids. Try not to lose any sleep over it.

Here's a fact we can only observe about %2 of the sky right now and at any moment we can and someday probably will be wiped out by a huge rock. But just live life to it's fullest and remember to be happy...

Asteroids get in our path every day, most of them burn when entering atmosphere, some of them (99.9% range from 2mm to 5cm) hit earth, this happens apr. 2 times a week.

Yep. I wouldn't be worried about any of the ones they're tracking. It's the ones they aren't.

Forget 25 years notice, it'll be more like 25 days.

Well, there is only a very slim chance it will hit the earth and with this much advance warning I'm hoping they could do something about it if it was on a collision coarse. I was hoping to enjoy my retirement

The time has come. No more need to worry about conversion ratios. Anarchy is upon us. Lock up your shit and start digging a tunnel to the center of the Earth.

I think I will take up heroin seeing as there is no need to worry about my health any longer

True they probably wouldn't, but with the internet, it's still gonna get out somehow.

Imagine the panic THEN, when the one they're tracking is 25 YEARS away...time enough for them to maybe do something.

I once wrote a short story about this.
My goal was to mine the asteroids for highly valuable minerals, but it could be adapted for this.

In the story, I had deployed thousands of spider like satellites. Eight legs which are used for securing the vehicles to the rocks, and on the back was a large rocket booster. The spiders encircle an asteroid or meteor etc, and attached themselves. Once fully covered, you can slowly move the rock by using the thrusters.

Of course many of the asteroids are just too massive and cant be moved.

the risk even increased today

As of Monday, the chances of an impact on April 13, 2029 stood at about 1-in-40, or 2.6 percent
