Dell

That is the only option.

Trust me, I have a Compaq, a Gateway, several IBMs, a Toshiba (actually I threw that one in the dumpster), and one of those HPs (which are probably 2nd on my list of good laptops). Go to Dell.com and buy a real one if you want to be happy with your laptop.

cool, I'll check the vaio as well...

so far this is what I found at dell's..

So far what I'd like is 15" screen... a DVD/CDR combo drive, 30gigs, and 800+ MHZ... 256 minimum ram...

with dell, on their webpage, I get this:

Inspiron 8100
1 GHZ
2X128Meg of ram
32 meg GeForce2
30 gig drive
Floppy
Millenium with WIN XP upgrade (I got my win2k here , don't need to pay more for it hehe)
10/100 + 56k modem
*x CD-RW/DVD combo
Microsoft works (couldn't care less)
and Dell's 3yr warranty 3 yr Onsite service
Additional battery..

2303$

that's pretty much what I'm looking for

any idea what other types of notebook would gimme something like that cheaper/same quality?

I'll give the vaio a look...

oh... you guys think that there's a good chance of the laptop breaking on me?

I mean, do they usually break?

then would it be a good idea to buy it at like dell which offers 3days back or something like that?

i bought myself a dell 8100 1.2 ghz, and its great.. but, it gets hot and its kinda bulky. I don't know if there's something wrong with my particular unit, but the bottom gets fucking hot. My wife has a vaio 1 Ghz, and i prefer that over my dell

No question here. I shopped around a lot then bought the Dell Inspiron 8100. Loaded the sucker up too. Here are a few suggestions for you...

Do not buy any memory upgrade from Dell. Go to Crucial.com and max it out at 256 x 2. I think this cost me about $130 with free shipping. Dell wants several hundred for this upgrade.

Go with the internal mini pci nic/modem combo. I think it was $30 more but well worth it.

For what you mentioned, there is no need for the 32mb video. Why pay extra for something you will not take advantage of?

DO NOT order the leather palm rests. I was very dissapointed.

Finally, I used to work for Dell tech support. The laptops are very reliable. Most of the support calls I received were from students that just got a new puter from mom and pops and fucked it up out of the box. It was almost always software related. If you know how to configure it then do not buy their extra shit. I downgraded the warranty to the lowest they had.

Good luck
