That's why we pronounce stitch as stitch. But mustache is pronounced mustash rather than mustitch. |

It's originally a french word. It's pronounced Neesh. Period.
|
When a 'che' is at the END of a word it's usually pronounced "sh". For instance mustache.
When a 'che' is at the BEGINNING of a word it's usually prounounced "ch' as in chestnut. When a 'tch' is at the END of a word it's usually pronounced 'ch' as in pitch. It's niche, not nitch, so it would be pronounced NEESH, if spoken 'correctly'. |

It's not the case in avalanche and psyche. Remember 'Y' is sometimes a vowel (a,e,i,o,u, and sometimes y). In this case I don't think the 'y' is considered a voewel. Nor is N a vowel. And that's why they're pronounced differently. Psyche sounds like Sike and Avalanche sounds like avalanch. |

It's niche, not nitch. Those who pronounce it as "nitch" should be thrown in jail for raping language :2 cents:

For instance in camouflage, you don't hear the 'U' because it follows the letter 'O'. It's camoflage, not camUflage even though there is a U in it. |
