Yea I seen that vid, that was a freak accident. Infact sean gannon (the guy who beat kimbo) was contacted by K-1 in trying to setup a rematch, cause the kimbo fans do not acknowledge the lost....

I hope it does happen and this time it'll be in the ring, on PPV.

Vitasoy 12-21-2004 01:48 AM

I'd love to see Bob Sapp vs Kimbo two big man go at it... it'd be a slug fest.

If he hit you, you broke. If you blocked a rib punch, you arm was broken or dislocated. If you didn't block, your rib was broken. He became known as the Godhand, a living manifestation of the Japanese warriors' maxim Ichi geki, Hissatsu or "One strike, certain death". To him, this was the true aim of technique in karate. The fancy footwork and intricate techniques were secondary (though he was also known for the power of his head kicks).
1. Japan didn't even know about Karate until the early 1900's, so.. huh? It's an Okinawan martial art, one they developed to beat the Japanese. Applying Budo ideals to Karate is like saying that Ghengis Khan was Sun Tzu's prodigy. Doesn't work if you know history.

2. Head kicks: Karate, the original style, and undoubtedly the style taught to Mas Oyama, doesn't have kicks about the waist. Are you talking about kicking opponents on the ground?

In my years of training, I've seen some amazing stuff. I've seen a guy's cup get broken in half by a front kick in a sparring match. I've seen guys break boards with their feet over 10 feet off the ground.

But when it comes to martial arts, only believe what you see. Everything else take with a grain of salt, as usually the people telling the story idolize the main character, and have a tendency to embellish.

Here's som footage of Mas Oyama.

http://www.kyokushinmail.com/koya/Kyokushin.htm

As someone who's trained for most of his life, there's a few things I'd like to point out.

1. One of the scenes where he's sparring, the video is cut to make him look faster. It's so poorly cut that you don't even need to go frame by frame. It's Oyama1.avi and his "opponent" takes a real hollywood swing over his head to facilitate the action.

2. When he's fighting the bull, he's a rope wrapped around his hand that's tied to the bull's nose ring. Anyone could fight a moderately sized bull with that kind of control. That would be like me fighting Royce Gracie but I've got his nuts in a choke chain and he's handcuffed. Even Ron Bluming, one of Oyama's top students, knows that most of this stuff was BS and wrote about it.

3. In one of the sparring clips his student throws two kicks at him while standing full facing for the entire fight. Anyone higher than yellow belt in a sparring martial art knows that this is just suicide, so I have to wonder if that video clip was contrived (Oyama5.avi). Also, why is the attacker not blocking? He's got his hands straight up in the air like Oyama has a gun.

You may need to find a new hero.

Defiance 12-21-2004 03:46 AM

Do weapons count?

Despite what people can do with one strike and so forth, I've always loved Miyamoto Musashi.

In all, he fought 52 bulls, three of which were killed instantly, and 49 had their horns taken off with knife hand blows"

Helio Gracie would have raped Oyama, all day every day. And wouldn't have broken a sweat doing it.

:2 cents:

Myth and legend mean squat. They're built up over time usually about people that have not been documented properly or falsified bs. Let's put this guy in a US arena without tricks, camera editing, and bogus tales of inhuman achievement. Something tells me he would be toast against true fighters...all day every day.

I personally know several people who were direct students under Mas Oyama. I'd believe their stories over someone just watching a video or trying to read between the lines of a book somewhere. The story about the bull wasn't a fight, but a demonstration of power. How many people could kill a bull by punching it, even if they had complete control over it by the nose ring, balls or whatever? How many people could rip it's horn off? That's what's impressive about the demonstration. I don't claim Oyama to be my "hero" by any means, but I respect his accomplishments and his martial art.
