Based on their site design, I'm pretty sure they understand what converts better than most people do.

I agree to some degree. But you still have to remember that the gallery is the first thing the surfer sees - and the first impression is the most important one.

By showing the surfer a good looking presentation page (the gallery) he will from the beginning get a sense of quality

Ofcourse the most important thing for a gallery is converting .. but my experience is that 20% of the converting is in the gallery, the remaining 80% is in the tour (the site) itself - you see a picture of a car in the magazine - you go to the dealer to find out if you really want it...

I use my 20% to give the surfer an impression of quality .. and ofcourse a little story of why he should click my links

I'm quite sure that any good gallery designer understands the basic principles for assembly of graphics and ad copy in such a way as to obtain the best possible CTR.

Jake and I will be selecting our top 10 picks based on what we feel will convert best for our site. We won't be selecting a gallery solely based on the fact that it "looks nice". However that doesn't mean galleries that "look nice" won't be selected. It's all about how everything is put together (the graphics, the copy, the links, etc.) As mentioned by ZeroGalleries we have a good understanding of what converts. If you've seen my tour it's anything but pretty, but it CONVERTS!

Anyway, after Jake and I select our top 10 picks they'll be posted here for the members of GFY to select the 5 winners. I would hope that the members of GFY would also use a similar criteria when selecting their picks.

I agree to an extent, which is probably why I like your work. However, I also believe that it depends not only on quality, but the audience of surfer that is most likely to signup for a particular site. If you give an illusion of quality to a surfer that is looking for an amateur site, is that surfer going to signup, or is the actual site going to be a letdown for them?

I agree with your thought that conversions are 20%/80%, but I also think it is highly a matter of targetting surfers that are right for the site that you are promoting. I think that is what the 20% is about - getting as many of the right target audience to the site tour as possible.

I think in this instance, quality is relative. To the surfer seeking a real amateur (like Allie), I think they are more concerned that there will be a lot of content available and that she is authentic in what she does as well as personable. I think this tour design emphasizes these qualities well.

So, again, back to the purpose of the gallery. I think designs that are consistent with the tour design convey the right audience to the tour. I would call this a quality audience, and most likely a paying one as well.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's participating in the contest. We've had a lot of requests for the zip file so I anticipate seeing quite a few entries.

I also wanted to make a note that Allie and I won't be commenting on any of the submissions until the contest has ended. The purpose of this contest is to obtain a wide variety of galleries from numerous perspectives and we don't want to lead everyone in the same direction (or away from a particular direction) by posting feedback on the galleries as they are posted.
