but they are primarily search. They want it simple... get the surfer off their site asap while giving them what they came looking for.

Men.com being a portal, it will want visitors there as long as possible, so, it will need sticky content., not minimal like Google

I really like the one Maxim did on your contest: http://maximuza.com/mendotcom/mendotcom1.html

I like that kind of style for a portal, a clean and futuristic look.

I think you need to stay away from dark backgrounds, I also don't like the fact that you use flask for your menu.

This is the best I've seen,
http://www.dreamache.com/mencom/newshow111.gif

s11 is too similar to http://www.healthygo.com/ ....

askmen.com = great design. Of course if you want men.com to be a men's portal.

in time their version will be completely redesigned to set it aside from healthygo.

and bodygain is more geared towards men, and weight lifting, building muscle mass. i think the dark harder appearence suits it well :)

im going to be making a mainstream version of it though with a white background.

We bought thousands of dollars of articles from writers but really weren't that impressed by what they turned in.

I'm telling you, most guys here do sites based on pictures. Try doing a magazine and you'll see how fun it is. NOT!

I have adult in the back pocket if this becomes too much of a headache, but we are getting advertisers and some of the other features we have upcoming can't have adult, so we're going to give them a shot and see what happens.

The one nice thing about a direct navigation domain is the free traffic flow never stops, so you have the luxury to experiment at minimal risk and cost.

It would be shames too use it for adult. I think there is much more opportunity/potential keeping it as a men?s portal/magazine, long term that is. I think in house writers/designers is the way too go with such a big project?..

However, even if its keep mainstream you?ll probably see most of your traffic going to you ?sex? pages?.you need a doctor sex, get someone exclusive.

Also, don?t forget about seo, askmen is huge with that?.

If you don?t mind me asking, what is/was your vision/goal for this project?

So far its going fine with the mainstream approach it just takes way longer than doing it adult style, and adds many more elements to the equation.

I need to find a way next to build in an extremely discreet navigation route to adult content on there without turning off the mainstream advertisers. Any ideas would be helpful.

One idea we had was to build it into the concierge club which is another feature we're still developing where only registered members will have access to those links.

Top site on the Net to search for single men (and women) and also provide a full featured entertainment style magazine.

we have differing tastes, that is the one i like the least. if I had to choose I'd pick the first one - although its pretty much a toss up between the 1st and 2nd.

Really, for such a big big (big) portal - minimize the amount of flash.

But you gotta admit that flash really gives sites that designer's edge.

Well, yes, but we all come to a point when we understand that its all eye candy. This is a highend site so some subtle flash effects would be good, but not if you have to sacrifice usability. Read "Dont make me think" by Steve Krug.

flash is a bit more difficult to manage in terms of content. and then there's that problem of SEO, although that is something that might not be a problem in the future.

When it comes to web sites everyone has their own likes and dislikes for color, spacing, buttons, flash, backgrounds, fonts, and on and on. There are so many elements and that is why you get such a variety of opinions.

The hardest thing so far for me has just been getting everyone on the teams to agree. Its a real challenge.

Actually old anarchy.com designs rocked

Varius 12-13-2004 10:15 PM

Just my :2 cents: but anyone trying to make a design for Men.com, I would avoidany circular shapes (even the logo...)

Curves, circles = softer for women
Squares, lines = harder for men

:thumbsup

one thing i see missing on the page is gadgets... guys like to see the latest pda or cell phone so they can show it off in the next boardroom meeting...

Good Shit.

KRL thanks for the chance and I'd love to enter but I'd say you go straight to the big boys for a design.

Humm...

Well I think we see eye to eye on somthing:glugglug

Indeed ya can not argue with direct simplicty.
Fight as some do about the way Yahoo looks or google...
Google says far more than a full page @ Yahoo.

Thats how the web works.
Thats why I always ask..

"Whats it do?"

If it does nothing. It has no purpose.
The result of no purpose is oblivion it will be lost, forgotten.

abyss_al 12-14-2004 02:17 AM

i think you need a google/yahoo look.... simple and to the point, maybe some custom buttons..etc...

there's only one guy here who does all that and more the best:
