Dimebag Darrell shot to death at show

It's totally slammed right now, so give it a few minutes to load.

SHOOTING AT DAMAGEPLAN SHOW

12/8/2004 11:54:21 PM ET

Rumors are flying about an alleged shooting at the Al Villa Rossa in Columbus, Ohio where Damageplan was scheduled to perform tonight.

The following was posted on the Web site for the NBC affiliate in Columbus at http://www.nbc4i.com/news/3983630/detail.html:

At Least 3 Dead, 4 Wounded In Nightclub Shooting
Witnesses: Alleged Guman Went Onto Stage, Fired Shots

POSTED: 10:32 pm EST December 8, 2004
UPDATED: 11:36 pm EST December 8, 2004

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At least three people died and four others were wounded after a shooting at a Columbus nightclub on Wednesday night, NBC 4 reported.

The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Road.

Two members of the heavy metal band Damageplan were reportedly shot and killed, including Dimebag Darrell, formerly with the band Pantera, NBC 4's David Wayne reported. The alleged gunman also died at the scene, Wayne reported.

Shortly after the band began playing its first song, a man reportedly ran onto the stage and began shooting, according to a witness who identified himself as Sean. Some members of the audience reportedly thought the man running onto the stage with a gun was part of the band's act, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.

The club is a popular north Columbus nightspot for young adults, featuring rock and heavy metal bands, NBC 4 reported.

According to the band's Web site, Damageplan was touring nationally. It performed in Buffalo, N.Y., on Tuesday night and had a concert scheduled in Flint, Mich., on Thursday.

Damageplan featured Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, formerly of the group Pantera. The pair were joined by vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bobzilla, according to their Web site.

Police did not release the identities of the shooting victims.

WBNS-10 TV in Columbus first posted the following information on their Web site at http://www.wbns10tv.com/Global/story...&nav=LUERTzwc:

Reports of a shooting at Al Rosa Villa on Sinclair Road in North Columbus.

Three people are dead and at least seven are wounded.

Three people in critical condition were taken to Riverside Hospital.

One person was taken to Grant Hospital in stable condition, with a gunshot wound to the thigh.

A triage center has been set up behind the restaurant to help victims with minor injuries still on the scene.

Here's an e-mail we received from a Sludgeaholic from Columbus:

Got some bad news for you guys, and this isn't a joke... as of 11:13 p.m. on Wednesday, word here in Columbus is that at least one member of the band Damage Plan has been shot during a live performance that was going on about an hour ago, at the Alrossa Villa, only two doors down from where I am at work, right now, typing this to you.

As of 11:30 p.m., the local news here is saying that 3 people are dead, and 4 were taken to a local hospital as a result of a shooting at the club. Some witnesses are saying (though this can't be confirmed) that someone from the audience approached the stage as Damage Plan was beginning to plan, and for one reason or another, shot (according to some reports) at least 3 times at guitarist Dimebag Darrel. Reports have not confirmed if Darrel is dead or not, but given the number of witness reports that have spoken to local news and have reported the same facts, things aren't looking good (some witnesses reported at least 5 shots at Darrel).

Why the shooter(s) did this is currently unbeknownst to me, or anyone that has been confirmed by local media or police authorities. I spoke to a cop here and he said that there may be more than one person involved in the shooting, but again, this can;t be confirmed.

Currently, the street where I work (again, only 2 doors down from the nightclub) is completely blocked by cop cars. Helecopters, cruisers, etc are all over the place. The largest strech of railroad track in the Columbus metro area runs right behind the club, and for some reason, the cops are combing these tracks like crazy; it's obvious that they are looking for someone/something there. We were told to lock all the doors to the building, as the shooter(s) may still be on the loose. Attached below are current clips from local news sources. This is not a hoax. Please do not reprint my email address becasue I am at work and I am only telling you what I have seen and heard.

Thanks and sorry to be the bearer of such shitty news,

J

Regardless of who was injured or killed, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

We'll be keeping you updated on this story as it develops.

This is crazy.

Going to shows will never be the same.

I saw Pantera lead off for Soulfly, Morbid Angel, and Nothingface about 4 years ago in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at some indoor hockey rink. Was cold as sin but worth every minute, a great show and the crowd was going nuts. Shows in non-arena venues are always such a blast.

That place was lit up with so much weed there couldn't have been one sober person within the arena.

Listening to Great Southern Trendkill right now. Can't find my Vulgar Display of Power.

Honestly I'm the last person in the world you would think would listen to Pantera. But when I became single again I dated this girl that was into heavy metal and Pantera was her fav band and I got hooked.

Funny shit was I was at home blasting Pantera and my ex stops by and walks into my office and goes "You gotta be fucking kidding me, let me guess she's 18, with tatoos and a pierced tongue."

From what I read, he was shot. I'm willing to bet that some fan ripped the gun out of his hand and popped him in the head. It would serve him right if that is what happened.

He was with Pantera years ago, but I think either he left or they dissolved, I'm not sure which. He used to be called Diamond Darrell, but after a couple of years, he insisted on being called Dimebag Darrell.

all i can say is holy crap!! that was such a freakin' nightmare... i don't ever want to be a part of anything like that again... i'm still shaking.... i don't even know what to say...

i was up close to the stage on the side where DBD was playing.... then i saw the guy jump out of the crwod onto the stage... he was yelling something about how "you broke up pantera.... you ruined my life.... what about phil??? he needs heroin money..." or something like that then i saw the gun and he shot DBD right in the head... when DBD went down he kept shooting... then he turned around for bobzilla then vinnie... teh hole time i thought it was part of the show... i had blood on me i was so close... i'm still freakin' out here...

after he turned around and kept shooting i was gone... i swear i almost crapped my pants... it was ####' crazy as ####... people were totally messed up outside... i was standing next to this one chick and she was crying and couldn't stop... she fell on the ground and it was like she was possesed or something... dude it was so kayotic its not even funny... the cops showed up and then people started sayin' that DBD was killed... then people started freaking out even more...

i can't belive this happend... its so crazy... its totally unreal and there's no way to describe how messed up i am right now...

i had tickets to the show in flint michigan too... i don't know whats going to happen... theres some blood on my ticket stub so i'm going to sell it on ebay or keep it or something... i know DBD is in heaven (or ripping some mad riffs in hell)

#### what a wild #### nigth... dude i won't even be able to sleep tonight

Sounds like a dude, probably high on drugs, and bickering over $$$ issues with the band. Isn't it always the way.
