Fuck people I dont know if Level 3 hosting is gunna make it.

Level 3 is really hurting.. They are the hosts behind many of the hosting companies..

I dont see them around next year.. What a mess.

Look at the stock even.. The value of the stock was over 100 a share a bit over a year ago, today it is barely above $2.38

It droped 20% today alone.. This is sad for a former giant in our industry.

A buddy of mine was layed off from his job there two days ago, he was one of their original first wave of hires. They are letting people go like crazy..

You web hosting brokers better keep your eyes open, if they fold there could be problems. Chances are it wont fold, but the state of the company is headed towards serious limbo.

Umm, pretty sure that it won't shut down.

Anyone remember what the government to help out that hedge fund giant?

I wouldn't be suprised if the US Gov. bailed Level 3 out, if they were that close... Too many people depend on that backbone.

Whether he's an actual webmaster or not is irrelevant.

Servint's been in Chapter 11 for around a year now and they are still going wide.

Level 3 doesn't depend on their stock for their bills, that's why people like us and LikeWhoa pay them big fat 6 figure checks every month.

Market capitalization is what you are worth on paper, it has zero to do with your cash flow situation. Once L3 sold the stock in the first place it was gone and no longer generates dollars in their bank acct, only in those of the holders of the stock who choose to sell it. By that same token they could be worth triple on paper what they are today and have zero cash to pay for anything.

Don't get so excited, even if L3 were to file bankruptcy it's not a big deal. Many companies have done it and come out fine.

But most companies never came out.

Level 3 laid off at least 25% of their employees.
Exodus laid off at least 32% of their employees and filed for Chapter 11.
Verio laid off 1000 people minimum.
Excite@Home laid off hundreds of people and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
PSINet is bankrupt.
Cable & Wireless laid of hundreds.

If your going to get hosted I would highly recommend getting on Verio's network. Not only are they financially secure but they have peering arrangements with @home, AOL and many other ISP's. This means your websites will load faster for those customers which = more $$ for you. Check your stats, I'm willing to bet at least 40% of your traffic comes from those ISP's.

Verio is *NOT* doing alright. I was having a billing dispute with them and when I got into the office Monday a message on my voice mail said that the person I was dealing with got canned. They just went under a huge restructuring.

What about Cogent? Do they suck or?? What have you heard?

I think most high-tech companies had the same problem in the last few years. People were throwing money at them so they wanted to show how big their balls were by building the biggest offices, hiring the most employees, having the coolest video games and drink machines and so on. Once the bubble burst, all these companies can easily lay off huge numbers of staff and still function fine. Excit has been laying off hundreds of people over that past 6 months and just filed for chapter 11, excite.com still works.

On a side note, i never did understand why you needed thousands of employees to run a web site. oh well.

Gary is right,

I remember an interview of a ex-employee of a dot com company that "got kicked of" nasdaq game. Their site if I'm right was selling wine. The employee said that they had 150 dell systems unused in boxes, office equipement and many other things. They were spending money without a reason and the site could be functional with the 1/10th of employees.

You nailed it Gary. I've seen that shit happen with my own eyes on a personal level. Last year I was one of the guys in the running for "Technical Content Editor" for a new dot com that was building up... they bought a big fancy building... lots of gear... hired people like crazy... had investors pouring tons of money into it... but they never really built up a solid foundation. They focused more on looking like another "pretty" dot com on the rise... I never did get the job. Someone I went to broadcasting school with undercut me for the position. I told her they'd be out of business in 6 months to a year... well, look at them now.

Actually Verio is fine, they dropped 750 people and closed 25 datacenters. They are only keeping the more profitable datacenters. They have funcing up the ass to stay in biz.

If you don't have Verio, Level3, Above.net, Exodus who do you have? They all can't dissappear..As Exodus and Level3 go away the remaining will pick up market share. Last man standing wins.

Hahahaha, Level 3 isn't going anywhere guys.

We just had one of their VPs out to our datacenter to meet with us and the guys been with the company since it started.

They have one hell of a plan for growth going on, and frankly I'm glad they asked us to be part of it.

We get much better support and service from L3 than we ever got from GTE, the bw is better and they are stable, regardless of what the financial wizards may think
