WARNING! Buying domains for $1,500 !!!

(please bump this thread so everyone sees it)

No, I'm not buying domains, but check your in-box for email like this one:

Quote:
Hello,

Are you willing to sell XXXXXXX.com to me.
I am starting a new business and thought this would be a good name.
I'm making an offer of 1500 USD. please let me know.
Thanks for your time.

Now before everyone replies to these guys, few things to keep in mind:

they may be legit or:

1) They may be building their mailing/spam list
2) They may be scamming you by using a fake escrow service to handle the transaction. they get your domain, you get nothing.
3) They may require you to pay for an appraisal and recommend you use one of their appraisers/partners/scammers
4) They may be testing to see if the domain's admin email is correct and if it isn't, then they will attempt to steal your domains using ICANN's new transfer policy

I have received over 4,000 emails from them in the last 48 hours and the emails are still coming.

and one more thing....

LOCK YOUR DOMAINS NOW OR THEY MAY BE STOLEN

anyone else get this email? everyone?

(please bump this thread so everyone sees it)

That's a scary thought. What can a person do if their domains get stolen?

Pretty much jack shit, I think. I'm not really sure, so don't quote me, but all of mine are locked to prevent this.

And I do NOT answer emails like that one unless I know for a fact that whomever sent it to me has already spoken to me about a possible deal.

I have a few daomins and have not gotten it yet, But I am sure that it will follow.

Do you think that they got this by doing who is searches, or maybe sold to them from a registrar?

I don't know the goal here - but so far I have only gotten these for paysites not freesites. That is strange.

yes, but "they" are emailing everyone.

"they" = FANHOUSE

but usually when I make/receive offers, price isn't mention till follow-up email. these guys are blanketing everyone with same offer, so seller beware. like I said, they may be legit... but at least I tried to warn people.

good luck to everyone.

Yep - we got the same thing happening too.. I thought it was kinda odd - getting them for domains we don't really use at this point - but each email is exactly the same.

Good to know - thanks

they offered $1,500 for boobjobs.com, official.com, sexblog.com, pornstarsearch.com, etc...

plus a few I forgot I had.

now if they would take all 11,000+ for $1,500 each, then we might have a deal. maybe. LOL.

or maybe I should DigiPawn my whole portfolio.

I got one too... damn it!

I responded for them to offer me 10 times more for me to think about it.

I would still say no to 15,000 so 1,500 doesn't get my interest.

I should have considered it invalid since my spam assassin caught it and I had to dig it out of my spam box in the first place.

Earthlink accepts complaints at [email protected] or [email protected]. Fanhouse seems to have ignored an earlier request to stop mailing me. At this point I have mail from him blocked, so I don't know if he's tried replying since then.

Taboo, I hadn't thought of your possibility #4, identifying invalid mail contacts for domain hijacking. That's clever, although in this case I don't think that's his motive, as he's mailing about domains with REGISTRAR-LOCK active, and he'd only need to send out a single message to each email address for that purpose.

Chupachups, it's not just a misunderstanding; according to ICANN's new rules, the current registrar can no longer prevent transfer requests for unlocked domains unless the owner explicitly rejects them. Failure to reply is the same as approval. The replies you made were likely made to the gaining registrar, not the current registrar of the domains being transferred.
