CHICAGO (AFP) - The first funeral for six hunters killed in a weekend shooting rampage in remote Wisconsin woods was held, as authorities weighed charges against the Hmong suspect in the case.

Friends and family of Mark Roidt paid their last respects to the 28-year-old at a service early Friday in a Catholic church in the hamlet of Dobie, Wisconsin.

He was buried in the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church afterwards, according to a spokeswoman for Jarocki Funeral Home in Rice Lake.

Three more victims' of Sunday's deadly shooting spree will be laid to rest Saturday, including a father-and-son pair, with the remaining funerals scheduled for Monday.

Their deaths have shaken the tight-knit communties of northwestern Wisconsin where the rampage occurred, cast a pall over the annual deer hunting season, and stirred up longstanding racial tensions.

Authorities and relatives of the victims are still puzzling over how a deer-hunting trespassing dispute could escalate into a tragedy of these proportions.

By all accounts, the incident began when the locals came across the Hmong hunter, Chai Vang, in a deer stand on the private estate where they were staying, and told him he was trespassing and needed to leave.

The two sides have given conflicting accounts of what happened next, with the locals saying Vang appeared to be complying when he unexpectedly opened fire on them with his assault-style rifle.

Vang, on the other hand, told investigators that he was provoked, according to an affidavit filed in court. He claimed the locals verbally abused him, calling him "chink" and "gook" and that one of the party fired at him as he was leaving, but missed.

But in the same affidavit, the 36-year-old Hmong immigrant confirms that he then hunted down and killed other members of the party, even firing on friends who had come to the aid of their injured colleagues.

The mother of Mark Roidt rejected Vang's account, as she wrestled with her grief earlier this week.

"I can't imagine any of them doing anything like that," said Karen Roidt. "It just doesn't make any sense.

"Our lives have just been turned upside down. Nobody knows what this has done. Nobody."

The Wisconsin Attorney General's office said it expects to file charges in the case Monday.

Vang, a truck driver and father of six from St. Paul, Minnesota, is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Tuesday in Hayward, Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, investigators from another county said they were looking into any possible connections between the weekend shootings and an unsolved deer-hunting homicide three years ago.

Authorities in Clark County stressed that Vang is not a suspect in the 2001 murder of James Southworth, 37, who was shot twice in the back on his family's land in Lynn, Wisconsin.

"Our purpose is to gather information on the Sawyer County case that can lead to witnesses, either through Mr. Vang or the Hmong community," said Clark County Chief Deputy Jim Backus.

Witnesses told police that they saw three Asian males near a pickup truck parked near where Southworth's body was found. Backus said detectives have been working on the theory that a dispute over land or trespassing lead to the Southworth shooting.
