I had tubes in my ears as a kid.... i used to get earaches bad....after all the heating pads i had to sleep on, and the gallons of ear drops.... I got tubes put in.
The worst thing that happened, was i couldnt go swimming for a few months. I went to hospital, they knocked me out.... put them in, easy as pie. Lots of kids have to get them. Its pretty common. After they were put in, i didnt feel any pain, nor did i ever have an earache again. |

My sister had tubes in her ears when we were children. I don't ever remember her complaining about any pain. She had to wear ear plugs to swim, and that was about the extend of the inconvience as far as I can remember.

There is no pain. I had them done when I was 14...now what hurt like hell was my tonsils being taken out.
I'm thankful my dad got the tubes in my ears..no more unbearable pain I was having from constant earaches. |

I think my little brother has them. This thread only reminded me of it, that shows you how much they'll even be noticed.

Both my sons had them, and one of them had them twice. They are in no pain. As a matter of fact, they instantly feel better because the earaches are gone. If they've had an ongoing issue, sounds may seem very loud to them for awhile, because they've not been hearing well.
You'll need to plug his ears as long as the tubes are in. If he is little, this will probably include bathtime too. My oldest son's doc recommended Silly Putty, and that is what I used. It forms a perfect seal. It's going to be one hell of a lot worse on you than it is your son. ![]()

They are for children that have repeated inner ear infections. And they are ultra tiny. Maybe about the size of the tip of a medium point ink pen.

My younger brother had them and it was some drama, but it eventually was ok. He also wound up having his adenoids? taken out because of it (near the tonsils, but not tonsils as I recall).
The joys of parenting. Getting 3x the pain through vicariously absorbing it from your children having to go through things like this...

My daughter was going to have to get them, she had 7 ear infection in her first 18 months, but we had to switch doctors and the new doctor wanted to hold off on putting them in, well lucky enough she is 2 years old and 3 months now and hasnt had another ear infection, so hopefully she wont have to get them.

Nothing is worse than the sound of your own kid crying with an ear infection. When my son went through it I spent countless nights up rocking him just to hear him scream in pain and there was literally nothing that I could do.
We had tubes put in his ears and within 24 hours the fluid buildup was gone and he never had another problem. They are the greatest things in the world. In fact, they are so great the several years ago Doctors would put the tubes in too much...they would take the easy way out and just put them in at the first sign of an infection. Now, they want to see a longer battle with the infections before they put tubes in which is good, in my opinion, because I think that in todays society we are too quick to try to fix something that may correct itself on its own. The only thing that we had to be careful of after the tubes went in was to put plugs in his ears when he went swimming for the first couple of months...after that it was all good. So, in my opinion if the Doctor says they are needed, then go with it and relax because it will be better all around. For the record, my experience was just a couple of years ago...my son is 5 now, so this is not something that I am talking about happening 20 years ago or anything. No matter what I am sure you will make the right decision...a parent just knows ![]() --T |

That was the exact experience i had .. my son was about 3 and had tons of ear aches ... had the tubes and nothing since ... he's about to be 8 and still has one that needs to fall out .... only weird part for me was that they had to put him under and i was in the room. they put the mask on his face and he freaked out for about 3 seconds and then just laid down ..but his eyes were open and he looked dead ... that image sticks with me ... i suggest not being in the room ... there's something about your kid laying there with there eyes open on an operation table that can freak you out. he was a bit nauseas when he woke but that went away fast ... overall it worked very well for him ... Good luck and i hope all goes well for you and your family .. ![]() |

I just want whats best for my little one and I feel bad cause it's effecting his speach.. he is 13 months and only says momma and Ba and ba is short for ball but to him all he hears is ba... so you hate to see that with your kid....

I should have added that the tubes my son had were ok in water ... they had a valve that would let out but not in .. he swims like crazy and doc said it would be fine ... never had to use ear plugs ..

One of my girls had them put in when she was like 8. She had ear infections all the time. Whenever she gets in water they hurt like hell. Just found out a year ago one of the tubes had not fallen out after 4 years. No wander she was still in pain.

I have tubes in my ears and all my kids have tubes in their ears too. I had chronic ear infections ( and hearing malfunctions ) until i had them put in. The surgery wasn't painfull and there was no pain in any of the kids afterwards either. ( and an increase in hearing )
One thing you should pay special attention to is , your child likely cant hear things the same as you do. I can't even to begin to explain how strange a hearing problem is. Its not just the loss of hearing , it also creates noise distortions and a loss of balance because of the changes in fluid levels int he inner ear, these can lead to nausea and vertigo among other things.. I'm not saying baby your kids , but be aware when noise levels are at a certain level , they may not be ignoring you , the sounds meld together and your child will subconciously block the sound out because it sounds so similar to other sounds.. Imagine you heard everyone like the WHAH WHAH WHAH on charlie browns teacher unless you paid special attention to what someone was saying. I learned to read lips without actually realising i was reading lips.

and your own voice seems twice as loud and distorted as anyone else's so i can see how it could lead to speech problems
