Trials......?

I have a marketing question.
From your experience, what works better? Having a text link on the main pages & the tour pages of a paysite saying "Trial $1.99" etc... or keep any "amount" clear off those pages and only have the statement "Limited Time 2 day trial $1.99" only on the signup page?

Any thoughts?

HAHAH i have my reasoning =) I'm just curious if a link on the main pages/tour pages does better/worse than a link only on the signup page.

I'm assuming you mean on your gallery or free site pages --

It's pretty simple -- if you put the trial amount on there you should see a lower clickthru ratio but a higher join ratio than you will if you leave it out.

KimmyKim, it sounds like he's starting a paysite ("tour pages", "signup page").

At any rate, when someone gets to your site they'll KNOW they're at a paysite, so enticing 'em with that $1.99 trial up front would make sense to me. You'll probably have to test it, though, to really be sure.

No KKim, =), I meant on the index paysite page and the tour pages vs. only the join page.

Yeah I went back and studied reading comprehension

The more you can get on trial the better the chance of recurring -- I'd run a 4.95 trial for 3 days recurring to either 29.95 or 34.95 if you have lots of content and update a ton. If not I'd go 3.95 to 14.95 or 19.95 --

You have to tell them eventually that there is money involved, I'd start from the first page and make it sound like a fantastic deal -- otherwise they will just hit the back button or close the window on the join page if they think you tricked em.

KimmyKim brought up a good point - don't make the trial too low or it'll be cheaper for people to buy a month's worth of trials than to actually pay the monthly membership fee.

You have hit on the source of a huge reason that pay site retention is sucking to high heaven right now.

When a surfer feels that it's a better deal to buy trial after trial and never take the monthly membership, it screws up the site owners profit margin hugely, and it trains surfers to cancel on trial.

There's still money in this industry, we just have to work to get it.
