What are the most common reasons that a normally healthy system would all of a suden only boot in safe mode?

OS is win98.

Most common reason is that you're using Win98.

Format C and install something from this century

alot of webmasters still prefer to use 98. I personally think its the best OS ever put out.

the system can only run win98 because the voice app only works on win98.

Yah, like XP or 2000 cause they are very stable.

Yes, something has corrupted or modified your OS.
- Did you install any programs, drivers or perform any updates? If yes, uninstall.
- Did you perform any scans (trojans or anti-virus) recently? If yes, perform a restore. If an online scan:

The beauty of an OS like 98 (unlike the crap 2K) is you can do a soft install over the existing one.

Run set-up (setup) from a dos prompt and re-install you OS. (Yah, BillyBoy's message will say it is not recommended.)
Drivers and yadda yadda will be intact (some software links maybe severed, but that is a minimal problem).

I have many many friends that use various OSs, and my fav to fix is 98 - I perform soft installs all the time, with no problem!
(Try the function "repair OS" from a 2k or XP disc ... what a mess that is.)

It's trying to protect you. Probably something crashed. Just reboot again. "If the problem persists, please contact your system administrator".
